PlayStation 3D Display TV Launches Nov. 13 — The Coolest Thing We Saw at E3

November 11, 2011 By Jonas Allen Leave a Comment
PS3 logo

By far the most innovative technology we saw at E3 this year was the 3D Display from Sony, a 3DTV that allows two gamers to play on the same TV screen while seeing completely different images. Sony has insisted that its PlayStation 3D Display is perfect for dorm rooms or small apartments, which is absolutely correct, but having used a Bravia 3DTV for the past year for Blu-ray 3D and 3D game review purposes, I can tell you without question that the 3D Display -- which goes on sale Nov. 13 -- could very well be what it takes to get friends and …

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Blu-ray 3D Review

October 27, 2011 By Jonas Allen Leave a Comment
Pirates: On Stranger Tides 3D

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides needed to prove something when it released this summer, and prove something it did: the film grossed more than $1 billion worldwide. What it needed to prove wasn’t the franchise’s status as a cash cow, nor Johnny Depp’s ability to make being a thieving drunk look so fun. No, what Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides needed to prove was that the abomination of At World’s End was simply a fluke, a bad movie that tarnished an otherwise awesome franchise. Pirates of the Caribbean: On …

Green Lantern Blu-ray 3D Review

October 27, 2011 By Jonas Allen Leave a Comment
Green Lantern 3D

I’d heard the jokes about Green Lantern, that watching the movie was merely an excuse to laugh at Ryan Reynolds after his breakup with Scarlett Johansson. I had no attachment to the comics either, meaning my interest would only be piqued by a great theatrical preview and good word of mouth. Well, Green Lantern came and went, so apparently my line of thinking wasn’t alone. Now Green Lantern has appeared on Blu-ray 3D, giving those who missed it theatrically a chance to see Green Lantern in its 3D glory on the small screen. The film does have …

More Disney and Pixar Films Coming to 3D in Theaters in 2012, 2013

The Lion King took a huge bite out of the box office upon its 3D release last month, so Disney today announced plans to bring back several other Disney and Disney*Pixar films back to the theater in full 3D. The additional films won't hit until 2012 and 2013, but the theatrical announcement can also be interpreted as harbingers of upcoming Blu-ray 3D releases. For instance, The Lion King's 3D theatrical release preceded the film's Blu-ray 3D release by only a few weeks. The following titles from Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios will be …

Toy Story Trilogy Coming to Blu-ray 3D on Nov. 1

3D Blu-ray Logo

The original Toy Story, Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3 are all slated to release on Blu-ray 3D, Disney announced today, with a release date for all three of November 1. This release marks the first time the Toy Story trilogy will have been available in the Blu-ray 3D format. If you're looking for all three films in a single Blu-ray 3D package, Disney will release a combination pack that includes the Blu-ray 3D version of each film for $100. If you use the following Amazon link, though, you can get a killer discount ($68 as of the writing of …

The Nightmare Before Christmas Blu-ray 3D Review

September 8, 2011 By Jonas Allen Leave a Comment
The Nightmare Before Christmas Blu-ray 3D

I’m just going to come right out and say it: The Nightmare Before Christmas was destined to be a Blu-ray 3D hit, and sure enough, 3D is the only way to watch this awesome Disney classic. Each fall, the Disney Parks outfit one of their signature rides (The Haunted Mansion) for a seasonal celebration of this film specifically, and you know it’s for good reason. The Nightmare Before Christmas has a huge following, and Disney knows its potential to immerse people in the Nightmare universe. To see Jack Skellington and crew in "real life" on The …

Mars Needs Moms Blu-ray 3D Review

Mars Needs Moms Blu-ray 3D Review

I’ve got two young kids, so seeing a theatrical release in the theater strikes about as often as a good night’s sleep. I’d wanted to see Mars Needs Moms in the theater but (surprise, surprise) hadn’t been able to due to family obligations. Home Blu-ray Disc releases, particularly Blu-ray 3D ones, are my best conduit to the outside movie-watching world. Naturally, then, I was stoked when Mars Needs Moms hit my Blu-ray 3D shelf -- almost as stoked as when I saw the first 3D visuals jump off the screen and smack me upside the head. Mars …

Drive Angry Blu-ray 3D Review

August 30, 2011 By Jonas Allen Leave a Comment
Drive Angry Blu-ray 3D

My daily commute has recently gone from 10-15 minutes to 40-50 minutes each way. Needless to say, I’m having to get friendly with talk radio. After particularly stressful days, I’ve found myself getting upset with the rush hour phenomenon. A few times I’ve even been on the verge of road rage -- and not The Simpsons videogame type. After one such recent commute, I noticed a Nicolas Cage Blu-ray 3D movie I’d been holding onto for just the right occasion. Well, that was the night; Drive Angry found its way almost immediately onto the 3DTV …

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Coming to Blu-ray in Oct. — In a Treasure Chest

August 29, 2011 By Jonas Allen Leave a Comment
Disney Home Entertainment logo

Call me a sucker for pretty, shiny things, but the announcement that Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is going to highlight a 15-dsc set that comes in a treasure chest made my heart flutter just a bit. Must be the little pirate in me. Or the fact that I've been to the Disney Parks 26 times.... The big set will release this October, along with the individual release on Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is slated to release on Blu-ray 3D on October 18, …

NextGen Rechargable Universal Active 3D Glasses Review

August 24, 2011 By Jonas Allen Leave a Comment
NextGen Rechargable Universal Active 3D Glasses

The demand for 3DTVs hasn’t gained steam as quickly as the manufacturers would’ve liked, though recent studies suggest that potential 3DTV buyers are not only prepared to spend more, but plan to buy a 3DTV in the not-too-distant future. One of the barriers to entry has traditionally been the expensive active-shutter glasses used by most sets, a pain point made even more unbearable by most active-shutter glasses being tied to a specific manufacturer. For instance, if you buy a Sony Bravia 3DTV, its glasses won’t work on a Panasonic or …
