Toy Story Blu-ray 3D Review

December 30, 2011 By Jonas Allen 1 Comment
Toy Story Blu-ray 3D

Toy Story was the industry’s first full-length CG film, so it isn’t surprising to see Disney release the Toy Story trilogy on Blu-ray 3D, a still-fresh technology that’s bound to take over your living room someday. Toy Story has been out on standard Blu-ray for a while, but its 3D appearance presents a whole new take on the Buzz and Woody experience. Ironically, though, it’s not necessarily the 3D effects that stand out most. The new 3D presentation opens with a Pixar logo that’s got depth and rotates, and follows that with a great …

G-Force Blu-ray 3D Review

December 30, 2011 By Jonas Allen 1 Comment
G-Force Blu-ray 3D

Superhero guinea pigs doesn’t sound like the most intriguing movie, let alone something readers would want to learn more about, so the first time G-Force released on Blu-ray I skipped it entirely. But there Disney went, releasing G-Force on Blu-ray 3D, and suddenly my review ears perked up. “Hmm, it mustn’t be half bad, if it’s getting the Blu-ray 3D treatment,” I thought. Still...superhero guinea pigs? I wasn’t sold. Now that I’ve watched G-Force in 3D, though, I’m pleased to say that it presents some interesting 3D effects, if …

Disney’s Chicken Little Blu-ray 3D Review

December 15, 2011 By Jonas Allen 2 Comments
Chicken Little Blu-ray 3D

Chicken Little was the first movie I saw theatrically in 3D, so watching it at home via Blu-ray 3D was an oddly reminiscent experience. The story -- a young chicken sees the “sky” fall but tries desperately to repress it until all alien Hell breaks loose and he can’t -- does feel a bit dated, but at the time of Chicken Little’s theatrical debut you could overlook that because the technology was so novel. Now the novelty of 3D has worn off to a certain degree, at least in my corner of the world, so the story triteness is a bit more …

Bolt Blu-ray 3D Review

December 15, 2011 By Jonas Allen 1 Comment
Bolt Blu-ray 3D

Bolt was one of a handful of animated movies I didn’t mind watching more than once. Sure, John Travolta voicing a superhero dog was funny, especially when you consider his owner was voiced by Miley Cyrus, but the narrative itself was decent enough that it warranted a couple of views. As a result, I was intrigued to see Bolt make Disney’s Blu-ray 3D release list this holiday season, because if the movie itself was worth a view, imagine what it would be like in 3D -- especially if the 3D effects were as expertly conceived as another archival …

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Blu-ray 3D Review

October 27, 2011 By Jonas Allen Leave a Comment
Pirates: On Stranger Tides 3D

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides needed to prove something when it released this summer, and prove something it did: the film grossed more than $1 billion worldwide. What it needed to prove wasn’t the franchise’s status as a cash cow, nor Johnny Depp’s ability to make being a thieving drunk look so fun. No, what Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides needed to prove was that the abomination of At World’s End was simply a fluke, a bad movie that tarnished an otherwise awesome franchise. Pirates of the Caribbean: On …

Green Lantern Blu-ray 3D Review

October 27, 2011 By Jonas Allen Leave a Comment
Green Lantern 3D

I’d heard the jokes about Green Lantern, that watching the movie was merely an excuse to laugh at Ryan Reynolds after his breakup with Scarlett Johansson. I had no attachment to the comics either, meaning my interest would only be piqued by a great theatrical preview and good word of mouth. Well, Green Lantern came and went, so apparently my line of thinking wasn’t alone. Now Green Lantern has appeared on Blu-ray 3D, giving those who missed it theatrically a chance to see Green Lantern in its 3D glory on the small screen. The film does have …

The Nightmare Before Christmas Blu-ray 3D Review

September 8, 2011 By Jonas Allen Leave a Comment
The Nightmare Before Christmas Blu-ray 3D

I’m just going to come right out and say it: The Nightmare Before Christmas was destined to be a Blu-ray 3D hit, and sure enough, 3D is the only way to watch this awesome Disney classic. Each fall, the Disney Parks outfit one of their signature rides (The Haunted Mansion) for a seasonal celebration of this film specifically, and you know it’s for good reason. The Nightmare Before Christmas has a huge following, and Disney knows its potential to immerse people in the Nightmare universe. To see Jack Skellington and crew in "real life" on The …

Mars Needs Moms Blu-ray 3D Review

Mars Needs Moms Blu-ray 3D Review

I’ve got two young kids, so seeing a theatrical release in the theater strikes about as often as a good night’s sleep. I’d wanted to see Mars Needs Moms in the theater but (surprise, surprise) hadn’t been able to due to family obligations. Home Blu-ray Disc releases, particularly Blu-ray 3D ones, are my best conduit to the outside movie-watching world. Naturally, then, I was stoked when Mars Needs Moms hit my Blu-ray 3D shelf -- almost as stoked as when I saw the first 3D visuals jump off the screen and smack me upside the head. Mars …

Drive Angry Blu-ray 3D Review

August 30, 2011 By Jonas Allen Leave a Comment
Drive Angry Blu-ray 3D

My daily commute has recently gone from 10-15 minutes to 40-50 minutes each way. Needless to say, I’m having to get friendly with talk radio. After particularly stressful days, I’ve found myself getting upset with the rush hour phenomenon. A few times I’ve even been on the verge of road rage -- and not The Simpsons videogame type. After one such recent commute, I noticed a Nicolas Cage Blu-ray 3D movie I’d been holding onto for just the right occasion. Well, that was the night; Drive Angry found its way almost immediately onto the 3DTV …

Sucker Punch Blu-ray Disc Review

July 11, 2011 By Jonas Allen 1 Comment
Sucker Punch Blu-ray Disc

I’d heard differing opinions about Sucker Punch when the film hit theaters, although one common thread was that the comic book-inspired film was hard to follow. A narrative junkie, I decided to wait for Sucker Punch to hit Blu-ray Disc in case the story was, in fact, a convoluted mess. Sucker Punch isn’t nearly as schizophrenic as I’d been led to believe, and it’s not much harder to follow than Inception. With that said, the plotline is less refined, and the cast doesn’t have nearly the same acting chops. Fortunately, the Blu-ray …
