Toy Story 3 Blu-ray 3D Review

January 1, 2012 By Jonas Allen Leave a Comment
Toy Story 3 Blu-ray 3D

As a parent, I find Toy Story 3 to be an incredibly sad movie. Well scripted, meaningful and great, to be sure, but emotional and sad nonetheless. As a so-called graphics whore, I find Toy Story 3 to be one of 2011’s benchmark CG films, with animations and textures so refined they’d make granular sugar cry. Yet as a fan of the Blu-ray 3D format, I find Toy Story 3 to be a bit disappointing. The technological jump from the first to second film was remarkable, as I noted in my Toy Story 2 Blu-ray 3D review, and the impact of those …

Toy Story 2 Blu-ray 3D Review

Toy Story 2 Blu-ray 3D

Pixar is always one to make evolutionary leaps in technology, with subtle changes between in films that somehow make all the difference. Yet when it comes to the Blu-ray 3D presentations of Toy Story and Toy Story 2, the jump is more drastic than any Pixar has taken to date. The straight-up graphical improvements cannot be denied, but it’s the little nuances between the first and second outings of Buzz Lightyear and Co. -- things like depth of field and improved animations -- that help make the 3D effects so much more robust and refined. The …

Toy Story Blu-ray 3D Review

December 30, 2011 By Jonas Allen 1 Comment
Toy Story Blu-ray 3D

Toy Story was the industry’s first full-length CG film, so it isn’t surprising to see Disney release the Toy Story trilogy on Blu-ray 3D, a still-fresh technology that’s bound to take over your living room someday. Toy Story has been out on standard Blu-ray for a while, but its 3D appearance presents a whole new take on the Buzz and Woody experience. Ironically, though, it’s not necessarily the 3D effects that stand out most. The new 3D presentation opens with a Pixar logo that’s got depth and rotates, and follows that with a great …

G-Force Blu-ray 3D Review

December 30, 2011 By Jonas Allen 1 Comment
G-Force Blu-ray 3D

Superhero guinea pigs doesn’t sound like the most intriguing movie, let alone something readers would want to learn more about, so the first time G-Force released on Blu-ray I skipped it entirely. But there Disney went, releasing G-Force on Blu-ray 3D, and suddenly my review ears perked up. “Hmm, it mustn’t be half bad, if it’s getting the Blu-ray 3D treatment,” I thought. Still...superhero guinea pigs? I wasn’t sold. Now that I’ve watched G-Force in 3D, though, I’m pleased to say that it presents some interesting 3D effects, if …

Disney’s Chicken Little Blu-ray 3D Review

December 15, 2011 By Jonas Allen 2 Comments
Chicken Little Blu-ray 3D

Chicken Little was the first movie I saw theatrically in 3D, so watching it at home via Blu-ray 3D was an oddly reminiscent experience. The story -- a young chicken sees the “sky” fall but tries desperately to repress it until all alien Hell breaks loose and he can’t -- does feel a bit dated, but at the time of Chicken Little’s theatrical debut you could overlook that because the technology was so novel. Now the novelty of 3D has worn off to a certain degree, at least in my corner of the world, so the story triteness is a bit more …

Bolt Blu-ray 3D Review

December 15, 2011 By Jonas Allen 1 Comment
Bolt Blu-ray 3D

Bolt was one of a handful of animated movies I didn’t mind watching more than once. Sure, John Travolta voicing a superhero dog was funny, especially when you consider his owner was voiced by Miley Cyrus, but the narrative itself was decent enough that it warranted a couple of views. As a result, I was intrigued to see Bolt make Disney’s Blu-ray 3D release list this holiday season, because if the movie itself was worth a view, imagine what it would be like in 3D -- especially if the 3D effects were as expertly conceived as another archival …

Star Trek: The Next Generation Coming to Blu-ray; “The Next Level” Debuts in January

December 13, 2011 By Jonas Allen Leave a Comment
Blu-ray Disc logo

Many moons ago, Star Trek: The Original Series was remastered and released on Blu-ray Disc to mixed reviews, although the only debate on my end when I reviewed Season One was whether to give it a 9.5 or 10. In 2012, CBS Home Entertainment will start releasing remastered versions of Star Trek: The Next Generation on Blu-ray Disc, and I've got to admit, I can't wait. Things kick off on January 31, when Star Trek: The Next Generation – The Next Level ships to retail as a sort of "teaser" of things to come. The complete first season of Star …

PlayStation 3D Display TV Launches Nov. 13 — The Coolest Thing We Saw at E3

November 11, 2011 By Jonas Allen Leave a Comment
PS3 logo

By far the most innovative technology we saw at E3 this year was the 3D Display from Sony, a 3DTV that allows two gamers to play on the same TV screen while seeing completely different images. Sony has insisted that its PlayStation 3D Display is perfect for dorm rooms or small apartments, which is absolutely correct, but having used a Bravia 3DTV for the past year for Blu-ray 3D and 3D game review purposes, I can tell you without question that the 3D Display -- which goes on sale Nov. 13 -- could very well be what it takes to get friends and …

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Blu-ray 3D Review

October 27, 2011 By Jonas Allen Leave a Comment
Pirates: On Stranger Tides 3D

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides needed to prove something when it released this summer, and prove something it did: the film grossed more than $1 billion worldwide. What it needed to prove wasn’t the franchise’s status as a cash cow, nor Johnny Depp’s ability to make being a thieving drunk look so fun. No, what Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides needed to prove was that the abomination of At World’s End was simply a fluke, a bad movie that tarnished an otherwise awesome franchise. Pirates of the Caribbean: On …

Green Lantern Blu-ray 3D Review

October 27, 2011 By Jonas Allen Leave a Comment
Green Lantern 3D

I’d heard the jokes about Green Lantern, that watching the movie was merely an excuse to laugh at Ryan Reynolds after his breakup with Scarlett Johansson. I had no attachment to the comics either, meaning my interest would only be piqued by a great theatrical preview and good word of mouth. Well, Green Lantern came and went, so apparently my line of thinking wasn’t alone. Now Green Lantern has appeared on Blu-ray 3D, giving those who missed it theatrically a chance to see Green Lantern in its 3D glory on the small screen. The film does have …
