Assassin’s Creed Revelations Review

December 29, 2011 By Jeff Paramchuk Leave a Comment
ACR

I adore the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Even though I look back on the first entry in to the series and remember the problems I had with it, there was something special there that kept me interested enough to check the sequel. AC2 addressed the biggest flaw that the first had, and that was the boredom that permeated the game, and then Brotherhood came out and much to the surprise of a lot of people included not only one of the better single player sections of the series, but added a ridiculously entertaining multiplayer mode. Cut to the third …

Michael Phelps: Push the Limit Review

Michael Phelps Push the Limit Review

With all the "suck for Luck" hubbub in the NFL and the protracted NBA lockout, you may have forgotten about a little thing called the Summer Olympics. You know, that little international event that will consume London this coming summer? The last time the Summer Olympics hit, the world was mesmerized by U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps, who broke all manner of medal records. Well, much like star NFL and NBA athletes are featured on video game covers, now Michael Phelps too has his own game, an Xbox Kinect-exclusive title called Michael Phelps: Push …

Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure Review

December 22, 2011 By Jonas Allen 2 Comments
Skylanders Review

I’ve been struggling for a while now to post my Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure review, because I’ve honestly had trouble putting the darn thing down. The overall concept is the most unique technological concept to come out of the game industry in 2011: the family-friendly action RPG uses real-world toys with embedded memory chips to track each character’s upgrades, and players can swap out their on-screen character with a new one at any time simply by placing a new toy on the Portal of Power accessory. Players can even take their toy(s) …

Hulk Hogan’s Main Event Review

Hulk Hogan's Main Event Review

Back when “WWF” didn’t stand for World Wildlife Federation, when Andre the Giant first left his feet via a Hulk Hogan suplex, and when Randy “Macho Man” Savage was the luckiest man alive because of Elizabeth, I was wrestling’s biggest fan. I watched Hogan battle the Iron Sheik, I attended local wrestling matches on Saturday nights, and I even caught the WWF (now WWE) when it came to town and had the good fortune to be left with a throbbing hand after the Ultimate Warrior high-fived me on his sprint to the ring. At one point, I even …

Modern Warfare 3 Review

December 18, 2011 By Jonas Allen 2 Comments
Modern Warfare 3 review

As one of the most revered first-person franchises around, the Call of Duty series has a reputation to uphold. Naturally you know it’s safe to expect high production values, particularly with the Infinity Ward-developed entries like Modern Warfare 3, but you also know not to expect Activision to rock the boat. After all, why change a franchise that’s set multiple all-time sales records? I certainly won’t argue with that logic; making money is why developers and publishers release games in the first place. But as a gamer, not an investor, …

PowerUp Heroes Review

December 13, 2011 By Jonas Allen Leave a Comment
PowerUp Heroes Kinect

Many Wii games have incorporated players’ Mii, but the Xbox 360 hasn’t done so nearly to the same degree. When Ubisoft first announced PowerUp Heroes for Kinect, allowing players’ Xbox Avatar to be their in-game combatant in a motion-controlled fighting game, my interest was undeniably piqued. Not only was the avatar integration unique, but a fighter controlled by my very movements sounded pretty sweet. Having now played through PowerUp Heroes, it really is pretty sweet, although it does suffer a few snafus. The premise of PowerUp …

Self Defense Training Camp Review

Self Defense Training Camp

It’s been years since my wife took a self-defense course, but apparently the concept of kicking someone in the groin can stand the test of time. So she said, anyway, as she watched me play Ubisoft’s Self Defense Training Camp for Xbox Kinect. “Yep, that’ll get ‘em every time,” she noted, followed by a running commentary about the power of punches to the nose, gouges to the eyes and all the other creative ways Ubisoft teaches gamers to manhandle a man’s handle. The cover text in Self Defense Training Camp indicates a …

GoldenEye 007 Reloaded Review

December 8, 2011 By Eric Pitt Leave a Comment
Goldeneye 007: Reloaded

The original Goldeneye 007 catapulted the first-person-shooter genre to the stratospheric status it enjoys today. The franchise was good and the N64 graphics were solid, but it was the gameplay --especially multiplayer -- that won gamers’ hearts. With Goldeneye 007: Reloaded, Activision hoped to capture lightning in a bottle and bring the franchise to a new generation of gamers. The result is a mix of old and new experiences that delivers some fun but can’t completely keep up with the outstanding FPSes modern gamers have at their …

X-Men Destiny Review

December 8, 2011 By Wade Wheeler Leave a Comment
X-Men Destiny Review

Silicon Knights doesn’t exactly have the best track record on the current hardware generation. They’ve had their success in the past, but Too Human for Xbox 360 -- designed to be a trilogy -- hasn't even had a sequel announced, and there’s a large contingent who will greet such news with a yawn. They could’ve made up some ground with X-Men Destiny, an action RPG that isn’t tied to a movie and instead lets players build up their own X-Man. But rather than make up any ground, X-Men Destiny falls flat upon it. The premise is good for …

Dance Central 2 Review

November 22, 2011 By Jeff Paramchuk Leave a Comment
DanceCentral2

I am not the target market for Dance Central nor its sequel, but I’d be a liar if I didn’t say that I love this series of games. I’m the guy who turns the radio to talk radio if the station I’m on starts inching towards pop music, let alone dance music. As far as I’m concerned, listening to dance music by choice ranks up there with picking up after my dog on walks. Yet I find myself wanting to pop this game in because it’s so much more than just the music, it’s a damned good time. For those unaware, Dance Central 2 is the …
