Insomniac Games’ Fuse: Hands-On Preview

September 16, 2012 By Jonas Allen Leave a Comment
Insomiac Games Fuse Feature

I don’t officially know whether Ted Price, founder and president of Insomniac Games, is a member of the NRA. I've never actually asked him, nor have I inquired with anyone else at Insomniac. But for as much as Insomniac has focused on guns, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a relationship there. Whether you're talking about Ratchet and Clank or Resistance, Insomniac’s gameplay lives and dies by guns and their various modes of fire. But if you think you've seen the epitome of gun-focused gameplay from Insomniac, think again. Insomniac's …

Splinter Cell Blacklist: An Amalgam of Tom Clancy Titles

June 6, 2012 By Jonas Allen Leave a Comment
Splinter Cell Blacklist

E3 is notorious for the grand return of beloved franchises, but one return that surprised us the most is Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Blacklist. The newest Sam Fisher game was announced before E3 2012 ever began, but spending some time with it in person has reminded us just how special the franchise is. Ironically, some of the elements that make the game "fresh" are actually long-standing features from other Ubisoft games, making Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Blacklist somewhat of an amalgam of all previous Tom Clancy games before it. That's not …

Darksiders 2 Hands-on Preview

March 22, 2012 By Jonas Allen Leave a Comment
Darksiders 2 Screenshot Feature

In this era of excessive gore, you’d think a game with one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse would be rife with blood, guts and violence. The original Darksiders game proved that hypothesis wrong, with a mature tone but decidedly more adventure- than action-oriented experience. For Darksiders 2, THQ and Vigil Games hope to up the ante in every possible way, a goal made possible in part by switching from the protagonist War to his brother, Death. The change means much more than a new veneer and name; after spending some significant …

Guitar Hero: World Tour Preview (PS3, Xbox 360)

September 16, 2008 By Jonas Allen Leave a Comment

Guitar Hero: World Tour is coming October 27 to all three major consoles (Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii), and you probably know by now that "Guitar Hero" now focuses on guitars in name alone. World Tour is a full-band affair that adds bass, drums and vocals to the mix, much like that other game from EA. What, did you think Activision was just going to ignore it? We recently traveled to Los Angeles to get some hands-on time with Guitar Hero: World Tour, and appropriately enough, the event took place at an actual recording studio. Much like the new …

Killzone 2 Multiplayer Preview

August 21, 2008 By Jonas Allen Leave a Comment

During our Best of E3 2008 Awards, we alluded to Killzone 2 doing things with the first-person-shooter genre that other developers are either unable to do or afraid to tackle. Guerilla Games is neither. The single-player aspects of Killzone 2 were on grand display at E3, but with the Leipzig Game Convention now in full swing, Killzone 2's multiplayer aspects are coming into focus. We've learned some of the first details about Killzone 2's RPG-like elements, a facet that may initially confound many PS3 gamers but that could eventually win gamers …

Pure Preview

August 21, 2008 By Jonas Allen Leave a Comment

Although today's highest-profile racing games focus on cars -- Gran Turismo, Forza Motorsport, DiRT and MotorStorm -- some of the most beloved and original racing games actually had a more blue-collar feel. For years, dirt bikes and ATVs ruled the racing roost, but as consoles began to direct gamers' focus to shiny graphics, shiny cars -- not muddy ones -- naturally followed. Rally games kept some of a focus on dirt, but the once-king ATVs were largely fringe. When Sony shipped MotorStorm, ATVs crept back into mainstream gamers' awareness, but …

Ghostbusters: The Video Game Preview

August 19, 2008 By Jonas Allen Leave a Comment

Long before Activision picked up the rights to Ghostbusters: The Video Game, a video circulated online showing what amounted to a tech demo of the world's favorite ghost hunters walking around with their Proton Packs. The fact that people got excited about that simple video showed just how strongly we all wanted to re-visit the Ghostbusters universe, DailyGame included. That enthusiasm, though, also laid the groundwork for the Internet-wide cursing when news spread that Activision Blizzard had dropped the game from its 2009 lineup. Well rest …

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Preview

August 18, 2008 By Jonas Allen Leave a Comment

As we left E3 2008, we knew we had to create a special award category for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. When LucasArts unveiled The Force Unleashed three E3s ago, it did so behind closed doors, a move that some interpreted as a lack of faith that LucasArts' internally developed game was good enough to win over Star Wars skeptics. What a different three years makes. Not only is The Force Unleashed shaping up to be a truly great Star Wars game, it's on its way to being one of the year's great next-gen action titles. Since leaving E3 2008, we've …

Dead Space Preview: The Environments

August 9, 2008 By Jonas Allen Leave a Comment

Going into EA's Dead Space Community Day, it was tempting to think of the new sci-fi franchise as little more than a DOOM clone. Science-fiction game set in space? Check. Horror elements? Check. Dark hallways populated by even darker demons? Check. That was our opinion at 9:00 am. By the time we left Electronic Arts at 6:00 pm, having played the (literal) hell out of three massive levels, our opinion changed entirely. Dead Space is anything but a DOOM clone. In fact, based on our time with it, Dead Space is poised to out-DOOM DOOM in every …

Sacred 2: Fallen Angel Preview

July 10, 2008 By Jonas Allen Leave a Comment

Sacred 2 is a sequel long in the making. When the original game released on PC in 2004, the action RPG earned critical accolades and a cult-like following, so a sequel was bound to come down the pipe. But the sequel that CDV is publishing for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 later this year isn't just more of the same; it's more of, well, everything. The online multiplayer is intact, as is the hack-and-slash gameplay, but the graphics, audio and quest list have gotten bigger, badder and bolder than ever. Although categorized as an action RPG, Sacred 2 …
