Modern Warfare 3 Review

December 18, 2011 By Jonas Allen 2 Comments
Modern Warfare 3 review

As one of the most revered first-person franchises around, the Call of Duty series has a reputation to uphold. Naturally you know it’s safe to expect high production values, particularly with the Infinity Ward-developed entries like Modern Warfare 3, but you also know not to expect Activision to rock the boat. After all, why change a franchise that’s set multiple all-time sales records? I certainly won’t argue with that logic; making money is why developers and publishers release games in the first place. But as a gamer, not an investor, …

GoldenEye 007 Reloaded Review

December 8, 2011 By Eric Pitt Leave a Comment
Goldeneye 007: Reloaded

The original Goldeneye 007 catapulted the first-person-shooter genre to the stratospheric status it enjoys today. The franchise was good and the N64 graphics were solid, but it was the gameplay --especially multiplayer -- that won gamers’ hearts. With Goldeneye 007: Reloaded, Activision hoped to capture lightning in a bottle and bring the franchise to a new generation of gamers. The result is a mix of old and new experiences that delivers some fun but can’t completely keep up with the outstanding FPSes modern gamers have at their …

X-Men Destiny Review

X-Men Destiny Review

Silicon Knights doesn’t exactly have the best track record on the current hardware generation. They’ve had their success in the past, but Too Human for Xbox 360 -- designed to be a trilogy -- hasn't even had a sequel announced, and there’s a large contingent who will greet such news with a yawn. They could’ve made up some ground with X-Men Destiny, an action RPG that isn’t tied to a movie and instead lets players build up their own X-Man. But rather than make up any ground, X-Men Destiny falls flat upon it. The premise is good for …

Carnival Island Review

November 25, 2011 By Jeff Paramchuk Leave a Comment
Carnival_Island1

When the Wii was released a deluge of minigame collections came out, some good and most pretty bad. Then the Playstation Move was released, and the flood turned into a trickle, it seems the Move isn’t quite on most gamers radars – which is unfortunate as it’s a solid piece of technology that was overshadowed by  an entirely different motion based gaming on another competitor’s console. That being said, I had the chance to kick back with my family and play some Carnival Island recently, and was pleasantly surprised at the collection of …

House of the Dead: Overkill Review

November 5, 2011 By Jeff Paramchuk Leave a Comment
HoTD

In sticking with the stereotypes that the Nintendo Wii has, it was pretty ballsy to release The House of the Dead: Overkill exclusively on that console, but it made perfect sense as that was the best system at the time to have the best representation of a light gun game. Now here we are more than two years later, and Overkill is coming in glorious gory HD and 3D to the PS3. The premise is amazingly simple – it’s prequel to House of the Dead, the classic light gun game that was a staple of arcades in years long gone and gone are the fancy …

Rocksmith Review

October 31, 2011 By Jeff Paramchuk 2 Comments
Rocksmith_Feature

Straight up disclaimer on this review - I don't know how to play guitar. I played ukelele 20 years ago, which morphed to a short couple month stint of using a guitar. Since then, the only musical expertise I have is pressing play on the iPod and a strange fondness for playing drums in Rock Band. I do however love to listen to music, and I love the idea of being able to play music. When Rocksmith was announced however, I was quite skeptical - could this be used to actually play a real song on a real instrument and not only teach complete …

Spider-Man Edge of Time Review

October 28, 2011 By Jeff Paramchuk Leave a Comment
SpiderMan_EoT

Developer Beenox produced what I felt was a fairly well thought out and received Spider-Man title with Shattered Dimensions, so when Edge of Time was introduced and revealed to have only two versions of Spider-Man in it, I thought that things could’ve been tightened up and the gameplay solidified a little. My thoughts were still along this track when I started playing Edge of Time, but then that line was quickly derailed. The story revolves around Miguel O’Hara (Spider-man 2099) who while spying on an evil scientist, in his time, watched …

Transformers: Dark of the Moon Review

October 15, 2011 By Jonas Allen Leave a Comment
Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Having seen Transformers: Dark of the Moon release on Blu-ray Disc, it occurred to me that I never reviewed its video game tie-in. Call me skeptical of a movie-based game. Call me callous for taking this long to get to it. Or, just call me forgetful. Regardless, one thing you can definitely call me is impressed, because although Transformers: Dark of the Moon does get tedious after a bit, it still pulls off being one of the more enjoyable Transformers game I’ve played, and makes it seem like Michael Bay director of Transformers knows what he …

Shadows of the Damned Review

October 11, 2011 By Sara Leave a Comment
Shadows of the Damned

Normally a summer ship date is music to gamers’ ears, with the new-release doldrums and all, but with a game like Shadows of the Damned, you almost wish EA would’ve waited until Halloween to charge into retail. Shadows, Damned, trips to alternate-universe Hell, zombies ... it just feels more natural in October. Unless EA knew that the desperation of summer would make the game seem better than it really is. Shadows of the Damned may have come from Suda 51 and Shinji Mikami, but pedigree and hype mean nothing when the end result is this …

Captain America: Super Soldier Review

October 10, 2011 By Jonas Allen Leave a Comment
Captain America

I seem to be in the gaming minority when it comes to comic books, because I never got into the whole “graphic novel” scene when I was young, and I don’t read them as an adult. Still, I have cursory knowledge of many comic-based characters, even if I don’t know their backstory. Take Captain America, for example. I know what he looked like, shield and all, when I was in my youth, and I know he was reinvented for this summer’s blockbuster Captain America film. Exactly how he was reinvented I couldn’t tell you. What I can tell you, …
