If you've ever gotten into diablo and loved it you HAVE to give this one a try.  It has no multiplayer, but they nailed that diablo feel, which is a very hard genre to get right.

I'd write more, but I've got a few minutes I could be playing it.

Give the game a try, just download it at

The Pet really makes the game, and I love the Diablo music.  The soundtrack was done by the same guy -

A fan of Diablo? Well, you should be. We’re huge fans of Matt Uelmen’s music here, which is why we’re a little more than ecstatic that he’s working on Torchlight from Runic Games which is out tomorrow. If you didn’t catch our lengthy interview with Matt Uelmen, I highly suggest you do, as he had a lot to say about the music for the game, his many instruments, and even about his time at Blizzard Entertainment.
The task at hand now, however, is the soundtrack for Torchlight. Is it any good? Does Uelmen live up to his work on Diablo and World of Warcraft? I think he most certainly does, and he miraculously does so without a big budget and a live orchestra. I guess if anything, as we all know was the case in the early days of game music, limitations drive people to do great things, and Matt Uelmen has certainly created something great with the Torchlight soundtrack.

Level 14 and still enjoying it.  It feels a little too easy, though.  I have to see if I have the latest patch so I can bump it up to hard.

I'm starting to get the more interesting items like strange fish you can it and eyeballs you can swallow.  I'm also working on getting my purple armor "set".

$20 is what I call affordable.  You get your bang for the buck with this one.

Has anyone played both Torchlight and the Fate series? They are remarkable similar. Does anyone know about a connection between the two development studios? Runic Games and Wild Tangent?

I don't know if there's a connection other than both companies are big Diablo fans.

Fate came out in 2005

I read somewhere that these are the same guys that made Fate.  I believe Fate got everyone (at blizzards) attention, and that's why Torchlight has the same music guy (and sound effects) as Diablo.

I'm STILL loving it.  I'm level 27 and it just keeps getting better.  I'm having a blast with the advanced level spells and really just enjoying the heck out of this game.

I think it's close to the end, though, but that's alright.  I have a very awesome collection of gems that I plan on passing on to the next char I create.

I think I'll go with the bow woman next time ...

I'm around 15-16 grabbed some of those "extra" dungeon maps for sale.

Some crazy things in there  Smiley

If you get through Torchlight, I would recomend playing Fate. If I remember correctly, the first one had 99 levels of the dungeon. There are also 2 expansions. You can get all three on Amazon for about $50, or you can just get the most recent one, which I also think can be played without the original, for $20, same as Torchlight.

I was going to get Torchlight and still might. But Dragon Age looks so good, I decided to put my money toward that one first. Unfortunatly, I got to GameStop to late and they were closed. I tried tapping on the window, but they wouldn't let me in. They said they'd be open tomorrow at 10 a.m., I told them I was going to be a hundred miles away come tomorrow.

Closest GameStop to me is 20 miles away. But then there are five of them!?

Wow that's weird, here in sterling heights, there isn't a GameStop to be found, until you get to M59 that's about 5 mins away from me, and then there are FOUR of them.   I'm not kidding!  and they are all within TWO MILES of one another.

Strange.  Think they might spread them out a little bit.    Huh

I played the 2 hr demo of Torchlight.  From my point of view, it's like playing FATE with better graphics, sound and storyline.  The only thing that irritates me is way too many items to sift through and determine what's the best to use for your character.   If they lowered the items a bit, I think I would like it better.  Maybe I'm getting old and customization isn't my thing anymore.

Just like in FATE, after rummaging and collecting treasure, you have to choose between 15 swords, 10 staffs, 30 bows, and 14 daggers.  Then you have to sell the rest or place some in your hope chest until you obtained the necessary skill and level to use it.  At first it's ok, but then it becomes a management feast.  I do like that some items that do have additional abilities and bonuses, but I think having 1000s of types of items can be nerve recking.  What happen to good storyline, a few weapons and the drive of the storyline to keep you playing?

I do like the mini-quests, but the quests and the main plot seem disconnected.  Plus it seems kinda linear, because when I restarted the game with a new character, it was the same map and characters.  With Fate, the dungeons were randomly created which added to the replay value - so you weren't stuck with same dungeons.  But maybe the retail version of the game will be randomized.  Don't know.  Maybe those that have played the full version can elaborate.

The controls were nice, and the keyboard shortcuts were easy to pickup.  And it has the same options if you die.  You can keep all gold and experience, but start back to the village, or lose exp and gold if you begin right where you left off, etc.

My Opinion:  Overall I like the game.  Good game play, graphics, same concepts as Fate and Diablo.  I do like the artsy style of the game designer and the background music.

Cons:  Way too many items to manage, would like to have better replay value concepts. (But of course, I haven't played the $20 version)
