“We’re so excited to launch our annual ‘Best EdApp’ of the year program,” said Karen L. Mahon, Ed.D., President and Founder of Balefire Labs. “We have reviewed more than 1400 educational apps to date and the six apps that have won this award top our charts and do an impressive job of meeting our objective and science-based review criteria. We hope that receiving this award will help these developers achieve greater recognition in the edtech space and with teachers and parents. We also hope this will lead to more kids successfully using these apps!”

Winners of the Best EdApp of 2013 award include the following apps:

Elementary School-level apps

Best Elementary Math App 2013: Splash Math – 3rd grade worksheets for Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, Fractions & 11 other chapters [HD Lite] by Splash Math

Best Elementary English Language Arts App 2013: Bugsy Kindergarten Reading School by Peapod Labs, LLC

Best Elementary Science App 2013: Max & Ruby science educational games by Tribal Nova

Secondary School-level apps

Best Secondary Math App 2013: Middle School Math 7th Grade by Monkey in the Middle Apps, LLC

Best Secondary English Language Arts App 2013: SAT Vocab – Mindsnacks by Mindsnacks

Best Secondary Science App 2013: Middle School Science 8th Grade by Monkey in the Middle Apps, LLC

Unlike many other awards in the edtech marketplace, Balefire Labs does not require companies to pay an entry fee to be considered for the “Best EdApp” award. “We feel that requiring an entry fee is inconsistent with our values,” says Mahon. “We think every app should have the opportunity to be recognized for its excellence, not just the ones created by developers who can afford an entry fee.”

Developers of the winning apps will be offered Balefire Labs’ “Best EdApp 2013″ badge to use in their marketing efforts.
