Is anyone still sad that The Masters Tournament doesn’t have Tiger Woods this year? After an incredible Round 2 at The Masters Tournament yesterday, that’s highly doubtful. Bubba Watson stormed up the leaderboard with some incredible shots, taking the lead headed into today’s Round 3. But Watson’s just one story to watch today. Bubba Watson entered Round 2 in seventh place after some solid Round 1 performances from golfers who weren’t exactly household names. But after birdies on six holes in Round 2, Watson catapulted from seventh to first place headed into Round 3 of The Masters Tournament today. His birdies on holes 7, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 were more than enough to overcome bogeys on the ninth and 18th holes.
Six birdies was also tops among a field that generally had a troublesome second round. Phil Mickelson, in fact, had a triple bogey — his second triple bogey in two days — on his way to a Round 2 73 and a 36-hole total of 149 (five over). After his Round 2 meltdown, which left him outside the top 50 and ties, Mickelson missed the 36-hole cut at the Masters for the first time in 17 years.
The only time in 22 Masters appearances Mickelson missed the cut was in 1997. Those 16 consecutive cuts was only one behind the 17 straight cuts made by Tiger Woods, who as mentioned above is missing the entire 2014 Masters Tournament due to injury.
Watson and Mickelson were clearly the top two stories of Round 2, although for different reasons. But when you watch Round 3 of The Masters online today, only one of those stories has a third chapter. Watson’s second-round game was solid, but one of his calling cards is inconsistency. Watson’s won the green jacket before; in 2012 he won a sudden-death playoff over Louis Oosthuizen. But with a homegrown swing he’s anything but a picture of steadiness.
Naturally that gives hope for the rest of The Masters field today. The first six groups in Round 3 of The Masters Tournament have had their tee times already, but it’s still early. All told there are 26 groups today in The Masters, with tee times running all the way to 2:45pm EST / 11:45am PST. So there’s plenty of Round 3 golf still to watch.
