We’ve (gleefully) reported in the past that Star Trek: The Video Game is getting the Gorn as an in-game enemy race, and today we have news that the Vulcans will be an ally. This news about Vulcans is a tad surprising, considering the Vulcan home planet was destroyed during the first “reboot” movie.
Star Trek: The Video Game, which is slated to ship on April 23 for Xbox 360 and PS3, supposedly takes place after the events of J.J. Abram’s 2009 Star Trek and before this May’s sequel. So, while not illogical, the inclusion of Vulcans as an ally does cause a bit of an eyebrow raise. Considering the context for the Vulcan character, it also hints at a possible new character for the forthcoming film.
Apparently Star Trek: The Video Game opens with Capt. Kirk and Cmdr. Spock responding to a distress call from a space station that’s under attack. The captain of the station is a Vulcan female scientist named T’Mar, who shares a history with Spock from when they were children. According to today’s announcement, T’Mar plays a “prominent role” in the game, to the point that she joins the Enterprise crew on their mission.
In other words, she’s either going to be killed by the end of the game like a red-shirted ensign, or she’s a serious candidate for a secret character in Abrams’ upcoming film.
She’s not the only Vulcan in the game, however. When the Enterprise crew visits the planet New Vulcan (yes, that’s a record-fast colonization), they meet Surok, who mentored Spock during the Starfleet commander’s childhood — and is also T’Mar’s father. Nice way to meet the parents…. Apparently the Enterprise visits New Vulcan too offer assistance following an attack by the Gorn, who were pursuing the valuable Helios Device. Although details are scant about the device and its purpose, it’s supposedly an integral element to the game’s plot.
I loved the live demos of Star Trek: The Video Game during the past two E3 Expos, and I’m eager to see how the final game shapes up. My excitement’s already high for the new film in May, so I’m hoping the April release of this high-profile co-op game will more than tide me over.
