One of our initial stops at E3 2013 was the Disney Interactive booth to see Disney Infinity, a new game a la Activision’s Skylanders in which players can place a real-life toy on an NFC-enabled portal to have that toy appear as a playable character in the game. The Skylanders games have been two of my kids’ favorite games in recent years, so they put me “on assignment” to see Disney Infinity — which I was intending to do anyway. After all, as a big Pirates of the Caribbean and Disney Parks fan, I was eager to see Captain Barbossa and Davy Jones, both their real-life toys and in-game counterparts.
Imagine my pleasant surprise when I was able to not only see both the Capt. Barbossa and Davy Jones toy, but to take home one of each for myself my kids. Yes, sharing them has been a total pain, but it’s certainly ratcheted up their interest in an Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii U game that doesn’t even release until later this summer. It’s a safe bet that other parents are going to want to pre-order Disney Infinity
We’ve filmed a series of videos following E3 to highlight the various Disney Infinity toys and features. This video showcases the aforementioned Capt. Barbossa figure, which very cleverly happens to include his monkey as well. Each character has a different visual feel, and it seems that the different franchises (via the Disney Infinity play sets) each has a different toy designer as well. So, what you’ll see of the Capt. Barbossa toy in this video looks remarkably different from The Lone Ranger or Cars toys we’ll explore in future videos.
