While Microsoft offers Xbox One owners just one new October 2014 Games with Gold free game, Sony’s given PS4 owners a total of three new titles on its PlayStation PS Plus October 2014 free games list. Normally there are just two PS Plus free games per month. A special version of Sony’s new racing game, DriveClub, is the bonus third PS Plus October 2014 game.
The DriveClub PlayStation Plus Edition includes 11 tracks, 10 cars and all the modes from the normal retail version of the game. The only way to get it is to be a PS Plus member. If you enjoy the game and want to “upgrade” to the retail version, you can do so for $49.99.
Don’t fault Sony for billing a “partial game” as a third PlayStation PS Plus October 2014 free game. The company’s decision to offer anything beyond two free PS4 games in October is brilliant. With the PS4 and Kinect-free Xbox One now costing the same amount, Sony’s PS Plus program has quickly become a differentiating factor between the two.
For the past two months, PS Plus members have been able to download two free games on the same day they became available for purchase by non-PS Plus members. In October, PS Plus members get three free games on their launch day, two of which are for PS4.
Dust: An Elysian Tail and Spelunky are both available at launch as part of the PlayStation PS Plus October 2014 free games list for PS4. Non-members will have to pay to get them at launch. Owners of a PlayStation Vita, meanwhile, get one free game at launch if they’re a PS Plus member: Pix the Cat.
Dust: An Elysian Tail is a fantastical action game that looks on the surface a lot like the Sly Cooper games. Spelunky, on the other hand, is a platformer with randomized levels. The PlayStation PS Plus October 2014 free games for PS4 are rounded out by the aforementioned DriveClub PlayStation Plus Edition.
As expected, PS3 owners get two free games in October — Batman: Arkham Asylum and Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara. Arkham Asylum is clearly the more recognized and commercial successful of the two games, and it’s great to see it here as part of the PlayStation PS Plus October 2014 free games lineup.
PS Vita owners also get two free PS Plus games in October: the arcade-inspired game Pix the Cat and the role-playing game Rainbow Moon.
All seven of these PlayStation PS Plus October 2014 free games will be available for download beginning on Tuesday, Oct. 7.
