Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo may be trading blows when it comes to sales and motion-control functionality for the current console generation, but Sony’s got the final bragging rights when discussing sales for the past two hardware iterations. The company today announced that worldwide sales of the PlayStation 2 topped 150 million units as of January 31, 2011.
Now, what’s a console without games? Not much, really. But that’s largely why the PS2 has sold so well. Sure, it ushered in the DVD format to households worldwide, but PlayStation 2 also has a library of more than 10,828 software titles. Couple those choices with the number of PS2s out there in the world, and more than 1.52 billion units of PlayStation 2 software have been sold worldwide.
That’s a lot of game time, folks.
Sony’s sell-through of 150 million PS2s was reached in 10 years and 11 months following the PlayStation 2’s launch in Japan in March 2000.
