Sony used a surprising amount of its E3 2013 booth space to show off PS4 indie games and titles for its PS Vita handheld, one of which was Tearaway. Tearaway is the first handheld game from Media Molecule, which is best known for its outstanding LittleBigPlanet games. Today, the developer divulged that the Tearaway release date has been delayed by one month, from mid-October to November 22.
Tearaway has been followed quite closely by PS Vita and PS3 owners alike because the studio itself has gathered quite a following. Naturally, then, any news of a Tearaway release date delay is bound to make for a sad day. Even would-be PS4 owners might be downtrodden at the news, considering the earlier October Tearaway release date would’ve given them plenty of time to play and beat the game before the PS4 release date either in late October or sometime in November.
The delay seems warranted, though, both because Media Molecule hasn’t done a handheld game before and because the studio has pretty high standards for excellence. In announcing the delay, in fact, the developer acknowledged its virginal caution with Sony’s handheld.
Media Molecule’s statement said that “[t]hroughout development we have constantly explored all the ways we could think of to create the most fun and enjoyable experiences possible on PS Vita, whilst also learning how to make a 3D creative platformer! We are really proud of the work we are doing, and are really excited to share it with you!
“We are now in the final stages of development, and have come to the realisation that we need a little more time than we anticipated to finish the game; to tie all of the mechanics, story and amazing visuals together into the adventure that we want you to play. To give us that time, we’ve decided to move the release date by one month…. We’re really, really sorry for the minor delay, we promise you hand on heart that the wait will be worthwhile! Thanks for being patient, please don’t be too cross with us.”
