The Evil Within came out of nowhere last year to be one of our favorite games of E3 2013. We couldn’t wait for its release on PS4 and Xbox One. Unfortunately, we’ll all have to wait even longer than expected, as Bethesda has announced The Evil Within release date has been delayed until October.
Bethesda has delayed The Evil Within release date in North America to Oct. 21, to Oct. 23 in Australia and Oct. 24 in the European Union. The Evil Within release date had originally been scheduled for two months earlier.
Although we were most excited for The Evil Within on both of the next-gen consoles, the game will have versions on Xbox 360, PS3 and Windows PC as well. The Evil Within release date for each of those systems is identical in each region to that of the PS4 and Xbox One versions.
Bethesda said the two-month The Evil Within release date delay came after a request by Shinji Mikami and the development team at Tango Gameworks. Without going into specifics, Bethesda said the developers “asked for additional time to further balance and refine the game in order to deliver the polished, terrifying pure survival horror experience they set out to create.”
Based on our experience with The Evil Within at E3 last year, we’d have guessed that the “pure survival horror” was already in great shape. Delaying its release seems a bit like passing the point of diminishing returns, although in the survival-horror genre it’s often those last little touches that make all the difference.
Perhaps to make up for the disappointment of the delayed The Evil Within release date, Bethesda concurrently announced a new pre-order bonus. If you pre-order The Evil Within, Bethesda will throw-in “The Fighting Chance Pack” that contains a handful of additional items that may help them stave off death for a moment longer.
The Fighting Chance Pack includes five special items:
- Medical Kit: A vital health enhancement to enable Sebastian to fight on
- Green Gel: Used to upgrade Sebastian’s attributes
- Double-Barrel Shotgun and Three Shells: A larger and more formidable shotgun than the regular shotgun, it’s useful for tight situations with multiple encroaching enemies
- An Incendiary Agony Bolt:Capable of showering nearby enemies with damaging fire sparks
- A Poison Agony Bolt: Will draw enemies towards it and poison them, allowing Sebastian time for a quick escape
Here’s the premise of The Evil Within: While investigating the scene of a gruesome mass murder, Detective Sebastian Castellanos and his partners encounter a mysterious and powerful force. After seeing the slaughter of fellow officers, Sebastian is ambushed and knocked unconscious. When he awakens, he finds himself in a deranged world where hideous creatures wander among the dead. Facing unimaginable terror, and fighting for survival, Sebastian embarks on a frightening journey to unravel what’s behind this evil force.
