Condemned: Criminal Origins

December 17, 2005 by Sara

The Xbox 360 has its fair share of racers, shooters and sports games, but the survival horror/psychological thriller genre gives gamers but one choice this holiday season: the Monolith-developed Condemned: Criminal Origins. Like F.E.A.R. (review), which Monolith also developed, Condemned is driven in large part by the main character’s bizarre illusions, but unlike the first-person shooter, Condemned has only a handful of guns, focusing instead on melee combat. The use of melee combat increases the fear factor (no pun … [Read more...]

King Kong

October 18, 2005 by Sara

With the exception of The Chronicles of Riddick, movie-based games almost universally stink. So when Ubisoft announced King Kong, it had an uphill perception battle from the get-go. But then Peter Jackson, who?s directing the film, asked to be personally involved in the development process. And the creator of Beyond Good and Evil took the creative reins. And the men decided that the game and movie would share digital assets. It was at that point that a funny thing happened: people began to think ?hey, maybe this King … [Read more...]

Gun

July 18, 2005 by Sara

The American Old West is a period seldom done right in the world of videogames. Since LucasArts’ Outlaws, in fact, nothing has quite captured both the flavor of the West and the fun we expect from our favorite pastime. Activision is hoping to change all that with a game called Gun, and it’s also looking to educate gamers about “the real West” in the process. The “real West” included gunfights. It included outlaws. It included frontier forts, crooked lawmen and bloody battles with Native Americans. We already knew that. … [Read more...]

Developer Interview: A Conversation about Gun

July 18, 2005 by Sara

Since E3 2004, it seems the scuttlebutt around the videogame industry has been about two things: next-generation consoles and what Neversoft was up to next. Normally known for its Tony Hawk games, Neversoft is embarking on a completely new adventure and franchise, known simply as ?Gun.? This third-person shooter takes place in the Old West, a genre heretofore butchered by developers both in story and in gameplay, LucasArts? Outlaws notwithstanding. While attending the official unveiling for Gun (read DailyGame?s Gun … [Read more...]

Full Auto

May 24, 2005 by Sara

Racing games are sure-fire sellers when it comes to the world of console videogames, as are the tried-and-true shooters. Consequently, companies come along from time to time trying to combine the two, but to date, only the Twisted Metal series has really done the racing-shooter “genre” justice. Pseudo Interactive and Sega hope to change all that with their Xbox 360 launch title Full Auto. Full Auto takes the best of the racing genre, namely pedal-to-the-metal urban racing, and combines it with the best the shooter genre … [Read more...]

An E3 Rant about Everything Xbox, PS2 and Nintendo

April 27, 2005 by Sara

Every year gaming journalists are inundated with requests from PR people who want us to interview their clients, meet with their clients and drink the same Kool-Aid their clients are drinking about their games/peripherals/apple pie at E3. That's fine. We all have jobs to do, and we all have things we want others to hear and see. I completely respect that, and without the help of many good PR professionals, we journalists would not be able to get DailyGame readers relevant game information in a timely manner. But where … [Read more...]

Interview with the Developers of Stargate: The Alliance

April 22, 2005 by Sara

Way down, deep in the darkest reaches of our childhood, we wanted desperately to be MacGyver. We wanted to make guns out of bubble-gum wrappers. Mirrors out of peanut butter. Fembots out of garbage bags. Alas, that opportunity never came, but then the TV show Stargate: SG1 came along, and our aspirations took a distinctly sci-fi turn. Stargate, the popular sci-fi series on cable television, may not have the heft of the Star Trek franchise, but it's got MacGyver (er, Richard Dean Anderson) and is on the verge of getting … [Read more...]

Dungeon Siege II

April 13, 2005 by Sara

Tired of skipping through the shallow puddles that are console hack-and-slash games? Longing for that deeper experience that only a PC, mouse and thousands of items, skills and powers can bring? Well then, I’m happy to report your wait is nearly over; Dungeon Siege II is on the horizon. More epic, more featured and a little less streamlined, the series is returning as Gas Powered Games’ second title in the dungeon-crawling genre, and with no Diablo sequel in sight, Dungeon Siege II should hit you like an old friend … [Read more...]

Duke's Diary: Reactions to the Rumor about $70 Games

March 7, 2005 by Sara

...So I said to him, "you think I'm big and ugly, you should take a look in the mirror, mouth-breather," and I stormed out of that EB like a bulimic from a buffet. It's a good thing he said that when he did, too, because if he'd looked at me like that one more time, I would've ... oh, it's you again. We really have to quit meeting like this, you interrupting me and all. It's getting to the point a controller can't sit around and tell a good story. I suppose you want to hear what I have to say about these rumors that … [Read more...]

NBA Street V3

February 28, 2005 by Sara

If you can immediately tell someone what Bill Clinton, George Clinton and a 12-year-old named Air Dog have in common, you already know that NBA Street V3 is your type of game. Arcade basketball videogames really got their start with the original NBA Jam, which featured the aforementioned characters as unlockable players. Since then, NBA Jam has been supplanted by NBA Street as the leader in all things arcade hoops. With its most recent chapter, NBA Street V3, Electronic Arts has upped the ante again, with a new … [Read more...]
