Racing Blind: The Only Multiplayer Driving Game You Play with Closed Eyes

April 9, 2013 by Sara Leave a Comment

There’s a new iPad racing game on the starting block, but it’s not the type you’d normally expect to see. Or, in this case, not see. Racing Blind is a multiplayer driving game you play with your eyes closed. The father-and-son developers first devised the game as a paper-and-pen title but eventually made it into an iPad game.

They’ve kept the iPad game as near to the original idea as possible, including that it’s supposed to be played with your eyes closed. You can play the game on your own, but the game really come into its own when in multiplayer mode. With up to nine drivers, watching each other swerve blindly around a choice of 36 tracks, get lost and crash is hilarious. The funniest thing is that it basically throws traditional competition out the window: anyone older than six has just as much chance of winning as Dad.

If you can’t trust your opponents to keep their eyes closed while driving, you can play with a blindfold. Alternatively you can switch the game to ‘Black-out’ mode in which you play with your eyes open, but the iPad screen goes black, so you’re still effectively “racing blind.”

Creating a computer game that requires you to close your eyes has caught most people unfamiliar with the game a little unawares. The game developers were like ‘Um, come again?’ But once the game was in development and in a shape that was playable they were ‘Ohhh right! Cool’ It’s counterintuitive to do without a computer game’s main attribute – it’s screen. But it really works. You’ll just have to try it for yourself. The funny thing is that the game flips the bird at fancy hi resolution screens. Who needs them? Well Racing Blind doesn’t at least.
