The fallout continues from Toshiba deciding today to stop manufacturing HD-DVD players, as Universal has just announced it will stop supporting HD-DVD and release its movies solely on Blu-ray Disc.
“The path for widespread adoption of the next-generation platform has finally become clear,” said Universal Studios Home Entertainment President Craig Kornblau. “While Universal values the close partnership we have shared with Toshiba, it is time to turn our focus to releasing new and catalog titles on Blu-ray.”
Universal’s decision to support Blu-ray exclusively leaves only Paramount supporting HD-DVD as its format of choice.
Unlike Paramount, however, which used to support Blu-ray Disc and HD-DVD and can feasibly get back on the Blu-ray bandwagon quickly, Paramount has heretofore been strictly in the HD-DVD camp, which may cause some logistical stress as it moves to Blu-ray production.
