“We are delighted to announce Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3 and believe the Steamworks support included will make it the best console version of the game.”
So said Gabe Newell when he announced that Valve’s Portal 2 will be released for the PS3 in 2011 at the same time the sequel ships for PC, Xbox 360 and Mac. Oh, and it’ll be the only console version to include Steamworks. How’s that for a taste of crow?
“When the PlayStation 3 was introduced, I was the one of the platform’s biggest critics,” said Gabe Newell, president and co-founder of Valve. “However, Sony Computer Entertainment has proved that the PlayStation 3 is the most open platform of all the current generation consoles and has worked extremely hard to make the platform the most desirable for consumers and developers.”
Portal 2 won’t reinvent the wheel from the original — why break a rockin’ formula? — but it will introduce multiplayer co-op game modes. The PS3 version of Portal 2 will also include Steamworks, a complete suite of game features and services including auto updates, community features and downloadable content. It’s still unclear, however, how or whether the PS3 version of Steamworks will differ from the version previously released on the PC and the Mac.
