Sony Cancels 'The Getaway' for PS3

June 4, 2008 by Sara Leave a Comment

When Sony first debuted the PS3 at its E3 2005 press conference, one of the games the company used to showcase its graphical prowess was a PS3 version of The Getaway. Set in London, the PS3 “tech demo” for The Getaway showed incredibly detailed streets, storefronts and environmental decor.

Turns out that’s all we’ll ever see of The Getaway on PlayStation 3.

Today, Sony suspended development of two big-name first-party PS3 titles, The Getaway and Eight Days. Both games were being developed by Sony’s London Studio.

Suspending development on The Getaway and Eight Days for PS3 was nothing personal, as Sony did so for financial reasons. The development house confirmed as much, with a statement saying:

It has been agreed that production of both Eight Days and The Getaway will cease immediately due to the redistribution of resources and budget.

We’re a bit sad to see the PS3 version of The Getaway get canned, but if Sony’s London Studio can focus on other projects that deliver the same level of detail, somehow we’ll find a way to cope.
