Resistance 2 is already atop PS3 owners’ most-wanted lists for this holiday season, but today, the co-director of SCEA’s Bend Studio shared some information that might vault it even higher for PS3 owners who also have a PSP.
“Chris Reese (my co-director at the studio) and I are in Tokyo this week presenting Resistance: Retribution at [Tokyo Game Show],” said John Garvin. “We’re pretty excited to announce that yes, we will be providing additional game play and features if you connect Resistance: Retribution and Resistance 2.”
The gameplay is geared primarily toward the PlayStation Portable, as Resistance 2 will “infect” the PSP’s Resistance: Retribution with a new mode called, you guessed it, “Infected.”
After connecting Resistance: Retribution to Resistance 2 via USB cable, players should go into the Resistance 2 options screen and select “Infect your PSP!” Once that’s done, Resistance 2 will activate a new mode on the PSP that lasts until the PSP is shut down.
Infected mode provides an alternate story in which Grayson, who is in prison for desertion, is recruited by Resistance 2’s Specter Lieutenant David LaSalle and infected with a mutated version of the Chimeran virus. While playing in Infected mode, Grayson wears a Specter uniform and has glowing Chimeran eyes, and he even gets to use one of the new weapons from Resistance 2: the HE .44 Magnum, which fires explosive rounds that can be triggered remotely.
Grayson (and thus PSP players) will also have regenerative health and thus no longer need to look for health packs. He can also breathe underwater, allowing him to reach hidden and previously unreachable areas.
The Infected mode will also add a new class of intel hidden throughout the levels that, when collected, will unlock another Resistance 2 weapon, Plasma Grenades.
SCEA Bend also announced that Resistance: Retribution will be playable via a new setup called “PSP Plus,” which will let gamers play Resistance: Retribution using the PS3’s Dualshock 3 wireless controller — complete with rumble effect. This mode will remove aim assist, by the way.
