The major game publishers are helping tell Microsoft’s and Sony’s next-gen story, it seems, encouraging Xbox 360 and PS3 owners to upgrade to the Xbox One and PS4 sooner rather than later. Activision has provided the latest example of this, announcing that the Call of Duty Ghosts PlayStation Upgrade will cost just $10 if PS3 owners purchase the game, eventually buy a PS4 and want to upgrade to the next-gen version of the first-person shooter.
Activision’s Call of Duty Ghosts PlayStation Upgrade setup is part of Sony’s larger PS3 to PS4 upgrade program.
The Call of Duty Ghosts PlayStation Upgrade program is completely optional and allows consumers who purchase COD: Ghosts on PS3 to upgrade to the PS4 version of the game for a suggested retail price of $10, €10, or £10 depending on territory. Activision was quick to point out, however, that the promotion runs for “a limited time,” meaning that if gamers want to get a next-gen title for $10, they’ll have to move to the next-gen console early in its lifecycle.
“Retail programs, announced by Amazon and GameStop allow our players to upgrade from the Xbox 360 to the Xbox One version of Call of Duty Ghosts for $10 as well,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing, Inc. “We have also previously announced that for a limited time our players will bring all of their Season Pass Content and all of their in-game progress with them within a console family, for no additional charge.”
Call of Duty Ghosts will release on Xbox 360, PS3, PC and Wii U November 5. The title will also release on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 “later this year,” although a specific release date has not been announced. The PS4 release date is Nov. 15 in North America.
