Nintendo Wii Becomes Top-Selling Console in U.S.

July 17, 2008 by Sara Leave a Comment

The Nintendo Wii finally has the status it’s been creeping toward since the holiday season: Number One. After 20 months, the Wii has become the top-selling console in the United States.

According to sales data from the NPD Group, Nintendo sold more than 666,000 Wii consoles in June, bringing the total number of Wii units on the market to 10.9 million.

When E3 began this week, Microsoft claimed the top spot during its press conference. At the time, that claim was correct, as the NPD Group had not released its sales figures for June. The Xbox 360 is now in second place in terms of U.S. install base, with the PlayStation 3 a distant third.

The Nintendo DS finished June as the top-selling game system in the United States in June.
