Super Mario RPG Jumps onto Wii

September 1, 2008 by Sara Leave a Comment

It may be a federal holiday in the United States today, but that doesn’t mean Nintendo is taking the day off from its Wii Ware and Virtual Console updates today. In fact, Nintendo went so far today as to upload a new Super Mario game to the Virtual Console. Well, as “new” as a Virtual Console game can be, that is.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (800 Wii Points), an SNES classic set in the Mushroom Kingdom, once again has Mario rescuing Princess Toadstool from Bowser. This time, though, there’s a new enemy named Smithy, which forces Mario and Bowser to fight as allies for the first time — in an RPG setting, no less. During their battle across several lands, the two nemeses-cum-allies will gain experience and grow more powerful while meeting new characters whose abilities will be needed to take on Smithy and his gang.

Also appearing on the Virtual Console today is Clu Clu Land (500 Wii Points), a puzzle game from the NES era in which players set out to uncover all of the gold bars in various underwater mazes while avoiding sea Urchins and dangerous black holes.

As for the Wii Ware update today, the new original title heading for the Wii Shop Channel is My Aquarium (500 Wii Points), from Hudson. With swaying aquatic plants and fish idly swimming about, My Aquarium is a relaxing Wii experience that allows players to enjoy a virtual aquarium in their spare time. Whether freshwater or saltwater aficionados, players can select from more than 40 types of fish and create up to six different aquariums, personalizing each with decorations such as seaweed and driftwood. Aquariums can then be sent to players’ registered Wii Friends. Another feature allows players to interact with their fish using the Wii Remote by doing things like “tapping” the aquarium’s glass.
