Wii Sports Resort to Hit Retail on Sunday

July 23, 2009 by Sara Leave a Comment

Wii Sports Resort is set to splash into retail on Sunday, with Nintendo hoping all those millions of Wii owners are ready to pick up the Wii Remote once again to play an all-new batch of 12 motion-controlled mini-games.

Wii Sports Resort will also include something radically new for the Wii Sports experience: the Wii MotionPlus accessory.

The 12 sports included in Wii Sports Resort are: Archery, Basketball, Bowling, Golf, Table Tennis, Swordplay, Air Sports, Canoeing, Cycling, Frisbee, Power Cruising and Wakeboarding. All the new games allow players to use the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers in different ways, and while some sports require both controllers, others can be played using only the Wii Remote.

For example, in archery, players hold the Wii Remote vertically like a bow while drawing back the Nunchuk. In Frisbee, players motion with the Wii Remote as though they were tossing a real Frisbee. And while playing wakeboarding, players hold the Wii Remote sideways as though they were hanging onto the end of a tether behind a speedboat

Meanwhile, the Wii MotionPlus accessory can be attached to the base of the Wii Remote to add new nuanced motion detection (slight twists or turns). This is particularly effective in the Frisbee toss, as we saw at E3, where the in-game results mimicked our real-life tendencies to send the flying disk off to the right.
