Years ago a PC game hit stores combining the first-person-shooter and real-time-strategy genres. That game was called Savage. Today the sequel, Savage 2: A Tortured Soul, was made available for PC as a download-only title.
Savage 2 incorporates elements of the FPS, RTS and RPG genres. It will set you back $29.99 USD if you want to play the multiplayer modes, but the offline/single-player tutorial is free. You can download it here.
Savage 2: A Tortured Soul is a multiplayer action title in which two teams (beasts and humans) of five to 17 players attempt to, well, destroy each other. Players can choose from an array of units each with ranged, melee and special abilities and take those skills into battle with them like an FPS. There are also siege units like the Behemoth or the Battering Ram, and players can even resurrect a burning demonic Hellbourne.
However, the RTS elements come into play with each team’s commander, who overlooks the battlefield and manages construction, research and issues commands for strategic assaults.
Savage 2 is free to download, and with the free client, gamers can play the offline single-player tutorial, play unlimited times via LAN and access the replay database that catalogues every game. If players want unlimited online play, full clan support and ability to use persistent items, then it’s time to upgrade to the $30 version.
