After weeks of rumors and speculation, Cryptic Studios today announced it has officially secured the rights to develop and publish Star Trek Online, a massively multiplayer online RPG. Even bigger news: it may not just appear on Windows PC.
Cryptic is known for its MMO games, so news that the company is working on Star Trek Online should be music o Star Trek fans’ Vulcan ears. Unfortunately, all we know at this point is that Cryptic is working on the game as you read this; additional details aren’t set to be revealed until the Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas.
Among the anticipated details are the platforms on which the game will appear. While Cryptic isn’t getting specific just yet, the company has indicated that a PC version may not be the only one. In other words: PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 owners may get to play the Star Trek MMO as well.
In addition to revealing Star Trek Online gameplay info, platforms and perhaps a target release date, Cryptic will also unveil the first Star Trek Online gameplay footage.
All these details will surface on August 10, when the Star Trek Convention kicks off in Sin City. The unveiling event will also be carried live via webcast
