Gears of War, the Xbox 360 shooter known for its chainsaw bayonet, is getting a couple new multiplayer maps courtesy of — The Discovery Channel? That’s right, the cable TV channel is ponying up so gamers can download the maps for free.
The first map, called Raven Down, takes place around a downed Raven Helicopter, which has crashed in the middle of a large-scale battle with the Locust Horde. Gears have taken out the Seeder, which leaves multiplayer gamers to join the Delta Forces moving into the crash site from all angles to search for survivors. Sounds like more of a single-player description than a multiplayer one, doesn’t it?
The second map, called Old Bones, takes place in an environment where the Locus have tried to eradicate any traces of human history and culture by emerging under the Capitaline Museums and begun destroying them brick by brick. Gamers’ mission, then, is to help the Delta Force recapture the museums before all remnants of humankind is obliterated. Again, if you’ll pardon the pun, it sounds more “geared” toward a single-player experience than a multiplayer one.
