Cyber Monday Deals for PS4, Xbox One Rare — But They Exist

December 2, 2013 by Sara Leave a Comment

Today is the first day after the long Thanksgiving weekend, which means back to work, back to school, and back to the Internet to find the best Cyber Monday deals online. After a crazy Black Friday shopping frenzy that saw the PS4 and Xbox One sold out in most if not all retailers, the search for Cyber Monday deals for the PS4 and Xbox One starts in earnest today.

Amazon Cyber Monday deals are bound to be the first stop on people’s search, but even the mega e-tailer was sold out of each system at the time of publication. But Amazon isn’t the only one with big deals today, and some of them do still relate to Microsoft’s and Sony’s next-gen consoles. The majority of the Cyber Monday deals are tied to next-gen games and accessories, but after shelling out $399 or $499 for a PS4 or Xbox One respectively, any discount is bound to be welcome.

Amazon’s biggest deals for Cyber Monday focus on electronics, with tablets such as the Kindle Fire being the most promoted of them all. That trend isn’t surprising, considering weekend sales data showing that more than one-third of shoppers purchased electronics over Thanksgiving and Black Friday, with the majority of them buying tablets. However, the slate of video game discounts today shouldn’t be overlooked, including for the PS4 and Xbox One.

Games for the PS3 and Xbox 360 are seeing the biggest discounts, with many titles going for more than 40% off (see them here). For instance, BioShock Infinite and Gears of War Judgment are each 50% off on Amazon’s Cyber Monday deals, but only while supplies last. Amazon’s biggest next-gen deals are for the Nintendo Wii U, which is one year old, rather than the PS4 or Xbox One, with multiple Wii U games seeing discounts of 50%.

With that said, Amazons Cyber Monday deals do show a host of Xbox One and PS4 games, even if they’re not discounted at the same high rate. For example, Madden NFL 25 can be had for both Sony’s and Microsoft’s next-gen console for $5 off as of this writing, as can LEGO: Marvel Super Heroes. FIFA 14 and NBA 2K14 for PS4 and Xbox One also have minor discounts specific to Amazon’s Cyber Monday specials.

With most hardware actually sold out for both systems, the biggest Cyber Monday deals outside of games are tied to accessories. For instance, Best Buy has a deal whereby you can get $20 off an Xbox Live Gold membership — representing a 33% discount — with the purchase of an Xbox One the next time they become available. Considering the inventory shortage, this Cyber Monday deal is likely to be extended beyond today’s online shopping day, so it’s worth inquiring about a rain check. A similar PlayStation Plus discount is not currently available for PS4 at Best Buy.

Walmart is getting in on the Cyber Monday deals as well, with page after page of discounts available online only. Walmart’s sold out of both next-gen consoles, but the retailer is offering some bundle discounts that can be pre-ordered today for when the systems once again become available. The moral of the story here, considering Walmart, Best Buy and Amazon Cyber Monday deals are all tied to games — and not generally the next-gen ones — is that Sony’s and Microsoft’s new consoles aren’t likely getting major discounts any time soon. They can be had, as we’ve shown above, but it’s generally on a pre-order basis. Keep that in mind today as you search online (at work?) for Cyber Monday deals, and you won’t be setting yourself up for disappointment.
