Were it not being played live in London’s Wembley Stadium, today’s 1pm game on CBS between the Miami Dolphins and Oakland Raiders would essentially be the Stink Bowl. The first of three NFL games to be played in London this year, today’s Dolphins / Raiders game live won’t exactly be putting the best foot forward for the American sport overseas. Fortunately the Brits might not notice.
For all the hype and hope thrown upon Miami quarterback Ryan Tannehill, the young QB hasn’t yet delivered this season. Through three games Tannehill has ranked dead last in the NFL with a 5.03-yards-per-attempt average and guided Miami to the league’s 29th-ranked passing game.
Incredible, Tannehill could look good in today’s Raiders game live in London, as Oakland QB Derek Carr has a 5.44 average (second to last among all QBs) and has led the Raiders to the 30th-ranked passing game. To be fair, Carr is a rookie QB and has shown great poise in third-down situations. He’s just shown signs of youth in his accuracy and decision-making in tight spots.
Miami does have a decent defense (8th in the NFL), so the Dolphins will pressure the Raiders’ rookie QB to make quick – and presumably bad – decisions in London. Their defense alone is likely why Miami’s 3.5-point favorites as you watch today’s Raiders game. Lord knows it’s not their general performance; they’re just 1-2 compared to Oakland’s 0-3 record.
With Tannehill a liability so far this season, the Dolphins will likely look to run the ball instead. Both teams’ defenses are better than their respective offenses, but that’s particularly true in Miami. As stated above, the Dolphins have a bad passing game but rank seventh in the league on the ground.
