“Is it too much to ask for frickin’ sharks with frickin’ laser beams attached to their heads?!” So asked Dr. Evil, and today, so answered Mitsubishi: “Yeah, that’s a bit much, but how about some details about Mitsubishi’s new LaserVue TV line?” Well, that’ll have to do….
Mitsubishi’s LaserVue will be available in 65-inch and 73-inch models only when it ships, with the 65-inch Diamond shipping to retailers in the third quarter of this year, and the 73-inch Diamond model to follow shortly thereafter. The benefits of the LaserVue sets, aside from massive size, is the fact that its use of lasers will, according to Mitsubishi, “[deliver] twice the color at half the power of today’s HDTVs while at the same time providing an unparalleled 3D viewing experience.”
3D viewing experience? Now you’ve got our attention. Too bad Mitsubishi didn’t go into greater detail….
What the company did share was that its LaserVue TVs have an operating power targeted at less than 200 watts, consuming approximately one-half the power of today’s LCD sets and one-third that of plasma HDTVs. And, at approximately 10 inches deep, LaserVue TV has been designed for both floor stand and wall-mount applications.
Laser beams provide the widest range of colors and the most clarity and depth of field, and the prototype sets’ performance in lab tests has shown more than twice the color of many of today’s HDTVs. Brightness has been demonstrated at about 500 nits, while the sets also include Smooth 120hz and x.v. Color.
Now if only we knew whether the sets would ship with 3D glasses, we might be even more excited.
