CEG TEK International Announces Findings From “Gaming Piracy Report” — 2.5 Million P2P Users Worldwide Illegally Shared The Top 60 Video Game Titles On A Daily Basis

June 12, 2014 by Sara Leave a Comment

LOS ANGELES, June 12, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — In the week leading up to the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles, where video game publishers are touting their latest releases, CEG TEK International (CEG TEK), a provider of in-depth business intelligence and comprehensive anti-piracy solutions, tracked piracy rates of 60 popular video game titles. In their latest report, CEG TEK found that over 2.5M unique peers (users) worldwide illegally shared those 60 games daily using the BitTorrent® peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing network.

Among video games that saw the most infringements were Ubisoft’s newly released action-adventure game and E3 award winner “Watch Dogs,” which had 253,417 users illegally sharing the game daily.  The latest in the Sims franchise published by Electronic Arts, “The Sims 3,” was the second most-pirated title with 172,588 daily worldwide infringements, followed by the perennial favorite from Mojang, “Minecraft,” with 151,948 worldwide.  Here is CEG’s list of the top five, most-pirated titles.  These are daily figures both domestic and abroad:

5. Need for Speed: Most Wanted (Criterion)

Among video game publishers, Electronic Arts led with the most piracy among its titles with 606,471 unique peers worldwide illegally sharing 13 of the titles on the top 60 list.  Ubisoft was second with 412,183 worldwide infringements daily on five titles, followed by Rockstar Games with 212,442 worldwide infringements on four titles daily.

“With most of these games being $20 and $50 or more to download, the loss of revenue from this amount of piracy is huge,” said Kyle Reed, Co-Founder and COO, CEG TEK.  “There’s been a lot of debate about whether or not piracy is really an issue for the massively successful video game business, but if publishers like Electronic Arts are losing nearly $30M a day in potential revenue on 13 of their hottest titles, that’s something to be concerned about.”
