First-Ever Interactive Book Series with a Virtual Game World: “The Lost World Diaries”

July 8, 2014 by Sara Leave a Comment

LOS ANGELES, July 8, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — In an ever-changing world of technology, kids’ attention spans are pulled into every direction: television, computer games/social media and cell phones dominate the lives of tweens and teens. So, how do you nurture a love of reading? “The Lost World Diaries” is the first-ever online book series that combines reading novels with a virtual game world online.  Each novel opens a new land, characters and storylines that kids 8-14 years old can discover.  The series will open for funding exclusively on Kickstarter starting July 7 and is expected to be the next big hit in time for Christmas.

The Lost World Diaries is easy to navigate and allows kids to interact with one another in a safe environment. The series features strong, intelligent lead characters in both genders, as well as a cast of colorful supporting characters.  If the project is fully funded, users can expect to see stories open new and exciting worlds in space, underwater and in mountainsides. The first book features the Baron’s Castle, floating on a mountaintop by bubbles, and the Airship that will transport players to the different worlds once they are opened.

For parents who fondly remember their own childhood with the popular “Choose Your Own Adventure” novels that let readers make decisions that affected the outcome of the stories, they will immediately understand the enjoyment from The Lost World Diaries for their children.

Literacy is critical to the advancement of a nation’s prosperity as well as the world’s well-being. According to the U.S. Department of Education, National Institute of Literacy, as of April 2013, 32 million adults in the US couldn’t read. Worldwide, illiteracy is an even larger issue; 774 million people globally cannot read, with 66% of those being female. According to BegintoRead.com:

-Two-thirds of students who cannot read proficiently by the end of the 4th grade will end up in jail or on welfare.

-One child in four grows up not knowing how to read.

-43% of adults at Level 1 literacy skills live in poverty compared to only 4% of those at Level 5.

-3 out of 4 food stamp recipients perform in the lowest 2 literacy levels.

-90% of welfare recipients are high school dropouts.

-16 to 19 year old girls at the poverty level and below, with below average skills, are 6 times more likely to have out-of-wedlock children than their reading counterparts.

-Low literary costs $73 million per year in terms of direct health care costs.

Pledges range from $1 e-card invites and $5 game coupons, to $2,000 executive producer credits and all four books with personalized characters.

“There has never been a book series that directly integrates an online game,” says creator Rick Momsen.  “The Lost World Diaries creates a desire to read as children and teens open up new worlds with each book.  Kids’ attention spans are fickle and we hope to create a lifelong love of reading by taking advantage of the technology that’s available today”.
