The Chicago Bears go into tonight’s Sunday Night Football game against the San Francisco 49ers wondering what went wrong last week. Although quarterback Jay Cutler guided the Bears offense to a No. 3 rating and a No. 3-rated passing attack, they still lost their season opener. The Niners, by comparison, go into tonight’s game 1-0 and ready for a slew of home games.
Cutler and the Bears moved the ball well last week. Cutler completed 34 of 49 passes for 349 yards and 2 touchdowns. All seemed well until he threw two interceptions — the Achilles heel of his career — that ultimately led to their 23-20 loss to the Buffalo Bills.
San Francisco, on the other hand, won their opener against the Dallas Cowboys with a balance of offense and defense. Going into tonight’s 49ers game on Sunday Night Football, Colin Kaepernick will be looking to improve on a performance that was good but not great.
Last week Kaepernick completed just 16 of 23 passes for 201 yards, with just 11 yards on the ground. Luckily running back Frank Gore had 63 yards to even things out, though the 49ers still enter tonight’s Sunday Night Football Week 2 game with just the 22nd-ranked overall offense.
Fortunately the San Francisco defense held up better than folks expected. The 49ers secondary recovered a fumble for a 35-yard touchdown, and they picked off two of Cowboys QB Tony Romo’s passes. That secondary will look to repeat that performance again in tonight’s Bears game, as Cutler is often considered cut from the same high-risk, high-reward fabric as Dallas’ Romo.
