NY Giants fans could be in for a long day with the Houston Texans in town today. Some people could even watch today’s Giants game live not to see if quarterback Eli Manning can deliver his first win of the season, but to see how he handles the pressure from Texans defensive end JJ Watt.
Manning and the 0-2 Giants are so far removed from their Super Bowl winning teams that even their most ardent fans are growing apathetic. The descending anchors for their 30th-ranked offense are the league’s 29th-ranked passing game and an air attack that ranks 20th in the NFL behind a still-struggling Eli Manning.
The Giants have failed to score more than 14 points in either of their two losses, a 14-35 drubbing in Week 1 against the Detroit Lions and a 14-25 loss against the Arizona Cardinals last week. Manning has been a big culprit, completing 44 of 72 pass attempts for 440 yards and three touchdowns.
On the defensive side of the ball, the NY Giants were dealt a blow this week learning that nickelback Walter Thurmond has been lost for the season with a torn pectoral muscle suffered last Sunday.
But the defense that gives most people reason to watch today’s Texans Giants game live isn’t New York’s. Houston may have lost linebacker Jadeveon Clowney for four to six weeks, but they’ve kept the pressure on with DE JJ Watt. Although the Texans rate just 25th in the NFL for total defense, the Texans enter today’s game with a 2-0 record after having eviscerated the Raiders last week 30-14 in a win that wasn’t even that close.
Although Watt didn’t have a tackle, that’s not going to happen often. But he was able to make a difference on offense by lining up at the tight end position and scoring a touchdown last Sunday against Oakland. Texans coach Bill O’Brien said Watt may line-up there again, perhaps as soon as today’s NY Giants game.
