It’s fair to say Microsoft wouldn’t have gotten off the ground with its original Xbox without Halo. For a year or more, the common joke was the first Xbox was little more than a Halo adapter for your TV. Microsoft’s understandably high on the franchise, and later this fall will release Halo: The Master Chief Collection on Xbox One, the first time the entire series starring Master Chief has appeared in a single box, and the first time it’s appeared on Xbox One.
But Halo: The Master Chief Collection isn’t the first time the Halo series will have appeared on Xbox One. Earlier this summer, Halo: Spartan Assault was released as part of the Xbox Games with Gold free games program. The strategy game is quite different from the first-person shooter of the Master Chief games, so it took some people by surprise.
For thinking gamers, Halo: Spartan Assault was a nice respite from the jump-happy Slayer matches. But not everyone got in on the Games with Gold program, and there are more Xbox One owners out there today than there were in June.
