It’s to be expected that the 3-1 Denver Broncos are in a different place than the 1-4 New York Jets. It’s to be expected that Broncos QB Peyton Manning is in a groove following one of the best games of his career last week against the Arizona Cardinals. And it’s to be expected that Jets QB Geno Smith is in the hot seat after missing a team meeting and cursing at fans.
Supposedly it’s therefore also to be expected that the Broncos have become even stronger favorites going into today’s Broncos / Jets game at 1pm Eastern. The Broncos opened the week as 6-point favorites and have increased that spread to 9 points in most books. While some is due to the Jets’ (and Geno Smith’s) woes, a larger reason is Manning.
Last Sunday Peyton Manning completed 31 of 47 passes for 479 yards and four touchdowns. One of those was Manning’s 500th TD pass of his career. Denver’s 41-20 domination of the Cardinals handed Arizona its first loss of the season.
Running back Montee Ball carried the ball just six times for seven yards, with Ronnie Hill doing the heavy lifting on his way to 64 yards. Ball on Monday was ruled out, perhaps for many weeks, with a groin injury. Hill will get his first career start today against the Jets, the first of what could be many.
The Jets’ defense ranks sixth in the league, as does their rushing-specific D, so Hill and Manning will have their work cut out for them. However, the Jets offense is abysmal, with QBs Smith and Michael Vick both coming with more questions than answers.
In last Sunday’s 31-0 shutout loss to the Chargers, Smith threw for just 27 yards and one interception before being replaced by Vick to start the second half. Vick didn’t perform much better, throwing for just 47 yards in two quarters. The Broncos defense isn’t stellar — 15th in points allowed and ranked 22nd against the pass — but it won’t have to be against a Jets team that’s lost four in a row.
