One of these days the Dallas Cowboys are going to have to sign Michael Sam to their 53-man roster rather than their practice squad. The way the injuries are going, they’ll really have no choice. But for today’s Cowboys / Titans game, Sam will still be watching from the stands.
The Dallas defense was already one of the NFL’s worst. Then linebacker Justin Durant was ruled out of today’s Titans / Cowboys game with a groin injury. Defensive end Lavar Edwards was sidelined with a knee injury. And Safety C.J. Spillman was called “questionable” for a game that will mark the second in a row that both defensive end Anthony Spencer and tackle Darrion Weems will miss.
Suddenly Sam’s availability looks mighty nice, doesn’t it Cowboys fans?
Dallas may be able to make up for that a bit on offense, where quarterback Tony Romo and wide receiver Dez Bryant are always a dangerous duo. Romo last week threw three interceptions against the 49ers, but he seldom has bad back-to-back games.
The Cowboys also have a not-so-secret weapon in running back DeMarco Murray. In the past eight games Murray has carried the ball 144 times for 780 yards and seven touchdowns. Whether Murray can perform that well against the Titans’ stifling defense may be key.
Yet Tennessee is no slouch on offense, which could overpower the Cowboys’ weakened D. In last week’s win over the Kansas Ciy Chiefs, Locker went 22-for-33 for 266 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Considering these teams haven’t met since 2010 — a 34-27 Tennessee win — Locker is a bit of an unknown for the Cowboys and could have a huge game today.
