Their Super Bowl win wasn’t enough, it seems. The Seattle Seahawks cruised through the preseason and right on through last Sunday’s kickoff against Green Bay. Today they face San Diego in a 4:05 EST / 1:05 PST game at Qualcomm Stadium with the Chargers looking to even their record.
Both history and recent performance show that will be an uphill battle in today’s Seahawks / Chargers game.
Seattle has won the past three games between the Seahawks and Chargers, most recently a preseason rout one month ago. That 41-14 win showed Seattle wasn’t about to miss a beat in its quest to repeat as Super Bowl champions.
Seahawks quarterback Russel Wilson only played four series in that Chargers game, but he threw for 121 yards and ran for two touchdowns while scoring on each possession. In last Sunday’s 36-16 win over Green Bay, Wilson went 19-for-28 passing for 191 yards, but the lower numbers were not indicative of the third-year QB slipping.
Wide receiver Percy Harvin, finally healthy, had 100 total rushing and receiving yards, and running back Marshawn Lynch rushed for 110 yards and two touchdowns.
While San Diego’s the home team in today’s game, they’ll be hard pressed to stop Wilson, Harvin, Lynch and Co. San Diego enters today’s Seahawks game with the 23rd-ranked defense after Week 1. Their offense is even worse, ranked 27th in the league.
Chargers QB Philip Rivers is a rare bright spot for the San Diego offense, having gone 21-for-36 for 238 yards last week. But while Rivers led the league with a 69.5% completion percentage last season, today’s Seahawks game pits him against a defense that’s best at shutting down short passes. Those are Rivers’ specialty. Seattle’s Legion of Boom, especially Richard Sherman, are no doubt ready.
