The Worms franchise has been one of the most long-standing series in videogames, though it doesn’t have the same recognition as Mario, Tetris or Pac-Man. The latest entry, Worms Battlegrounds, has been announced for Xbox One and PS4. Team17 said it’s slated to release later this year.
Coming out of GDC, though, the more newsworthy part of Worms Battlegrounds announcement is that it’s going to be one of the first self-published games as part of the ID@Xbox program.
Team17, a veteran indie British publisher, is one of the ID@Xbox program ambassadors, so it makes sense to see Worms Battlegrounds be among the program’s first self-published games. The game will mark the franchise’s debut on the next-generation consoles, having already appeared on more than 25 other platforms since its introduction in 1995.
Yep, the franchise has some serious staying power.
Additional details about Worms Battlegrounds are sparse at this point. So far, the game is only coming to the Xbox One and PS4, not the Wii U, PS3 or Xbox 360. We also don’t know a release date, though Team17 has said it will release this year.
