No matter how quickly Sony and Microsoft sell their new PS4 and Xbox One consoles, respectively, there will always be people who question whether the end of the home console is nigh. One company that may be hoping for such a future is Phillips, which has announced a deal with OnLive installed on new Philips Android TVs.
OnLive is a game-streaming service similar to the Gaikai service Sony purchased several years ago and turned into PlayStation Now.
OnLive Game Service available on new models of Philips TVs powered by Android™ that will be released in Europe during 2014 and beyond.
The OnLive Game Service Android™ app will be available out-of-the-box alongside other on-demand entertainment apps for music and video. By simply connecting a game controller or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, users will be able to sign up and connect to their OnLive accounts for access to hundreds of the latest big-name games, playable directly on their Philips TVs.
TP Vision is the exclusive brand licensee of Philips TVs in Europe and Russia, Middle East, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and selected countries in Asia-Pacific. All Philips TVs powered by Android™ feature Ambilight, an LED lighting technology unique to Philips TVs, which throws a glow of light—matched to the colors on the screen—onto the wall behind the TV creating a more visually dynamic and immersive experience.
“Integrating OnLive directly onto Philips TVs powered by Android™ is a perfect example of how even the most graphically demanding games can be delivered into the living room without the need for dedicated high-end gaming hardware,” said Rick Sanchez, VP for Product and Marketing at OnLive. “OnLive delivers gaming with the same instant-on convenience and benefits that is driving consumers’ surging interest for on-demand video and music services.”
“We’re delighted to be partnering with TP Vision in this way,” added Bruce Grove, General Manager at OnLive. “This integration is indicative of our device strategy—we aim to be wherever players want to play their games. It also aligns extremely well with our imminent expansion in Nordic territories, where the Philips brand continues to be a market leader.”
Since its launch in 2010, OnLive has empowered premium-quality gaming via the cloud on nearly any Mac® or PC computer and a wide range of thin client devices, including lightweight laptops, tablets, smart phones and TVs—platforms that would normally lack the processing power and memory to run graphics intensive games and other applications. Users can enjoy the freedom and convenience of the OnLive Game Service, playing their games seamlessly across connected devices wherever they are.
