The R-Type series is an arcade and early-console stalwart, a side-scrolling space shooter that virtually created the alien-blasting genre. But today, the series is bolting in a whole new direction, as Atlus USA has shipped R-Type Command for the PlayStation Portable (PSP).
R-Type Command is a turn-based strategy game.
The plot is largely the same as previous R-Type outings, with humanity in a war against the alien Bydo. Humans send wave after wave of fighters into Bydo space, none of which are ever heard from again. The last hope resides with a lone commander, sent to lead a small armada on a perilous mission into the heart of the Bydo Empire.
Rather than just blast alien ships, though, players will find themselves low on fuel and forced to scavenge resources and equipment from their surroundings. These elements, plus turn-based combat, mean players need to have their wits about them if they hope to save humanity.
If you’re thinking about getting the PSP game, head to Amazon, Game Crazy or GameStop, which are offering (while supplies last) a free R-9 figurine. The R-9 is the classic R-Type ship.
