Quarterback Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints were firing on all cylinders in last week’s road game against Atlanta, but they still lost in overtime. The Cleveland Browns had a similarly solid game behind quarterback Brian Hoyer, but they also dropped the game to the Steelers. Watch today’s Saints / Browns game and you’ll see one of those teams drop to 0-2. If it’s the Browns, how long will Johnny Manziel sit on the bench?
If today’s Browns offense plays like last week’s version, Cleveland should be fine in its home opener at 1pm EST in FirstEnergy Stadium. But even if the Browns lose today’s Saints / Browns game, Johnny Manziel will likely stay on the sideline for at least one more game.
Last week Hoyer went 12-for-14 in the second half, racking up 172 yards and a touchdown. It was a marked improvement from the first half, when he managed just 47 yards on 4-of-11 passing against Pittsburgh. For the game Hoyer finished with 230 yards and a touchdown, while running back Terrance West dashed for 100 yards and Isaiah Crowell scored two TDs on the ground.
Keep that up, and the Browns could be in good shape. Miss a beat, though, and the New Orleans Saints will be ready to head back to the Big Easy with a win.
Saints QB Drew Brees passed for 333 yards on the game but had an untimely interception in the end zone in the third quarter. Although New Orleans scored on all four of their first-half possessions, and with rookie wide receiver Brandin Cooks scoring a TD pass, the Saints still dropped the game in overtime.
Last season New Orleans dominated at home but struggled away from the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Things looks different headed into today’s Saints / Browns game, with Brees and Co. doing all the right things on the road. Few would’ve thought a Hoyer / Brees showdown could be competitive, but it just might today.
