PlayStation Store September 2014 Revenue Sets Record

October 16, 2014 by Sara

In the PS4 vs Xbox One sales battle, analysts, media and fans pay attention to straight-up console sales figures. Today Sony announced a new line of battle on the digital-sales front, saying the PlayStation Store September 2014 revenue set an all-time PSN record for Sony Computer Entertainment America.

SCEA’s PlayStation Store September 2014 revenue was buoyed by Destiny, which was one of, if not the, most-hyped games of 2014. You can read our Destiny review here. According to Sony’s internal revenue figures, Destiny broke PlayStation Network (PSN) sales records across several categories: pre-orders, launch-day sales and first-week sales.

Even now, one month after the Destiny release date, Sony says Destiny remains the most-played title on PS4, with PS4 owners logging 125 million hours of gameplay. Just to put that into context, that equates to just over 14,269 years.

Sony’s Eric Lempel, VP of Sony Network Entertainment International, said PlayStation Store September 2014 revenue increased almost 90 percent year-over-year.

Unfortunately, Sony did not divulge specific data, so we can’t verify that until Sony’s earnings report comes out.

As much as the PS4 vs Xbox One sales argument had already swung in Sony’s favor this year, Lempel did share that September was highest month for PS4 sales so far in 2014.

According to Sony, PS4 hardware sales had its biggest month in September due specifically to the limited-edition Destiny white PS4 bundle. The Glacier White PS4 Destiny bundle is still available at Amazon if you haven’t picked one up already.

While the PlayStation Store September 2014 revenue was driven by Destiny, that’s not the only game that contributed to Sony’s digital coffers. inFAMOUS First Light and The Last of Us Remastered were specifically referenced by Sony as contributing to the PSN Store’s bottom line.
