Gears of War 3. Yep, we finally have the first details about Epic’s closing chapter in the Gears of War trilogy. We also have an exact release date. And oh yeah, we have the first Gears of War 3 screenshots, too.
At this time next year, Gears of War 3 will be released upon the Xbox 360 masses by Microsoft and Epic Games, the final outing in the Gears of War story. The exact Gears of War 3 release date? How’s this for specific: April 5, 2011, in North America and Asia; April 7 in Japan; and April 8 in Europe and the rest of the world.
Precise plot details are scarce at this point, but we do have some information about the overall gist: “Gears of War 3 will plunge players into a harrowing tale of hope, survival and brotherhood that will conclude the current story arc. With the last human city destroyed and the remaining survivors stranded, time is running out for Marcus and his comrades as they fight to save the human race from the jaws of extinction.”
There are a few things to take from this info: “the current story arc.” So, Gears of War 3 is the final chapter in the current saga, but much like Bungie did with Halo 3: ODST, there could be plenty of fodder for offshoot storylines and future games. Perhaps a prequel focused on Marcus’ dad’s experience?
Another item worth noting: “the last human city.” Hmm, there are plenty of other cities worth exploring, then? Perhaps we’ll see a later game take a more Horde-like perspective, much like Halo 2 introduced the Arbiter.
But look, that’s all speculation and hype. And we want to leave hype to the pros. Like Cliffy B., for instance. “When we released Gears of War more than three years ago, we set out to tell the world an unforgettable story of bravery and sacrifice in the face of insurmountable odds, and a year from now, players will get the chance to experience the final chapter in the story of Marcus Fenix and his companions in Delta Squad,” Cliff Bleszinski said in a prepared statement. “This is definitely the biggest and most dramatic chapter yet in the Gears of War saga, and we can’t wait to deliver it.”
We’ll bring you more Gears of War 3 details as they emerge. In the meantime, check out those first Gears of War 3 screenshots. They’re purty.
