Today’s Jacksonville Jaguars / Washington Redskins game is the first time the Redskins’ home fans will get to see the “pocket passer” version of quarterback Robert Griffin III (RG3). Last week the offense installed by new head coach Jay Gruden racked up passing yards but still fell to the Texans. If they do that again today at home, RG3 and the Washington offense may hear some boos.
In their season opener the Redskins gained 372 yards to the Houston Texans’ 321, but only one-third of those yards came on the ground. Gruden is trying to take a quarterback who was once the NFL’s most dangerous dual-threat QB and turn him into a pocket passer.
The Redskins last week ran 40 pass plays compared to 20 rushing plays, showing just how much Gruden wants to protect RG3’s knees and body. The passing yards added up. The end result didn’t.
Griffin threw for 267 yards but was sacked three times and had just two rushing yards from three carries. The Redskins lost 17-6 to a Houston team without star rookie Jadeveon Clowney, who missed the entire second half after injuring his leg. Clowney will now be out 4-6 weeks after having surgery to repair his meniscus.
Those results could make today’s Jaguars / Redskins game interesting. Last week against the Eagles, the Jaguars defense sacked quarterback Nick Foles five times. On the flip side, the Jaguars also allowed Darren Sproles to break free for a 49-yard touchdown run, so consistency will be key if they hope to quiet the Redskins today.
The Jaguars and Redskins last met in 2010, a game Washington won 20-17. But those were both very different teams, and the two 0-1 teams today are watching to see how they rebound after tough losses in their season openers.
