Back in the "day," Gottlieb manufactured some of the best and most memorable pinball machines ever made. There was a time when almost every corner drug store or grocery store had at least one pinball machine. And you'd better believe I found every one in my neighborhood. Unfortunately, the golden age of the pinball machine has come and gone. But it is most certainly not forgotten. And thanks to the developers at Farsite and the publishing team at Crave, we can now carry around 13 of Gottlieb's classic tables in our … [Read more...]
Rise of Legends
At E3 of 2005, Big Huge Games shocked and amazed many fans when they announced that the upcoming incarnation of Rise of Nations, their now-classic RTS series, would not be historically based. Rather, Big Huge Games was making a big huge change, and taking their game into the realm of "steampunk" fantasy, a world that was part mechanical, part magical and most definitely unique. In the steam powered pseudo-Victorian world of Rise of Legends (the game's new moniker), players could use magic and technology to pursue their … [Read more...]
Fight Night Round 3
During Sony's E3 2005 press conference, representatives from EA Sports stepped on stage and demonstrated what they said was a real-time round of Fight Night Round 3. Barring blindness, everyone at the press conference couldn't help but be overwhelmed by the impeccable details and animations. Many people had their doubts that the footage was real, but having played a preview build of the Xbox 360 version, I'm here to assure you that Fight Night Round 3 looks every bit as good as promised. And oh yeah, it plays well … [Read more...]
Pac-Man World 3
I still remember the first time I saw a Pac-Man arcade machine in the entrance of a local store. I watched over the shoulder of the kid who was playing, patiently waiting my turn. I was hooked after the first quarter I dropped into the slot. Every time I had some change in my pocket, I would walk to that store to get my Pac-Man fix. Here it is, 25 years later, and although his name and likeness have endured in my (and millions of others') mind, the little yellow guy has appeared in numerous mostly forgettable games. In … [Read more...]
Painkiller: Hell Wars
During DailyGame’s first trip to E3, we walked into the LA Convention Center and were flat-out in awe. The bass-pounding speakers, the stories-high TV screens, the oddly dressed mascots ... the Dreamcatcher Games booth. Crammed in the corner, behind the large displays of better-known publishers, sat four PC monitors demonstrating a new first-person shooter called Painkiller. At the time, we thought we were just in awe of being at E3. Then a funny thing happened: other people and publications started to take notice. They … [Read more...]
GUN Review
The American Old West hasn’t exactly been kind to the world of videogames as a setting or a gameplay experience. Since the PC game Outlaws, a decade-old first-person shooter, no Western-themed game has come close to being fun, with some of them even being downright horrible. No matter the hype or potential, it seems the Old West was destined to deliver a stinker. Still, I’m an Old West junkie, so in spite of the genre’s dubious history, I was intrigued when Neversoft announced it was working on Gun, an Old West game in … [Read more...]
