The Hunt for Red October was one of my favorite movies of the early 1990s, one of the few films I kept on VHS even as DVD started taking over local video stores' shelves. I've been a big fan of Sean Connery since his James Bond days, which helped, but the real draw was its hot-button political intrigue and underwater setting, neither of which had really come into its own at that time. When The Hunt for Red October dove onto Blu-ray Disc, I decided to toss the old, duty VHS copy aside and move up to the world of HD … [Read more...]
D-BOX Signs Universal Studios for Blu-ray Motion Code
Universal Studios today became the fifth major motion-picture studio to sign-on with D-BOX Technologies to implement Motion Code in its Blu-ray Disc movie releases. The first Universal Studios Blu-ray release with D-BOX Motion Code will be Death Race, but the Motion Code track for The Incredible Hulk will surely not be far behind. Death Race is scheduled to be released on Blu-ray on December 23. Today's a big day for D-BOX, as the company made this announcement and is seeing its Motion Code included in a high-profile … [Read more...]
D-BOX Signs Motion Code Deal with Electronic Arts
You've seen us talking a lot about D-BOX Motion Code here at DailyGame, generally as it relates to the Motion Coded movements in Blu-ray movies. Today, D-BOX and Electronic Arts gave us new justification for that enthusiasm: the two companies signed a deal to incorporate D-BOX's motion-simulation technology into its upcoming Need for Speed Undercover. The agreement, technically signed solely with EA Black Box, will allow Black Box to integrate the unique technology on the PC version alone. D-BOX Motion Code is … [Read more...]
The Happening D-BOX Review
It's not that often that D-BOX Motion Code is the best feature on a Blu-ray movie. A great complementary feature, yes, but hands-down the best aspect of the entire production? With The Happening, that's exactly the case. I'm not going to sugar-coat it: The Happening is the worst thing to happen to Blu-ray Disc since the format debuted. Well, except maybe Zombie Strippers; hard to find much "right" with that one. The saving grace with The Happening on Blu-ray is D-BOX Motion Code, both because it's a fantastic technology … [Read more...]
National Treasure 2 D-BOX Review
The National Treasure series has arguably become the new generation's Indiana Jones. Sure, Nicolas Cage's character focuses more on textbook history than archaeological discovery, but Indy's spirit of adventure and exploration are alive and kicking. "Kicking" also happens to be the perfect word for the Blu-ray version of National Treasure 2, which includes D-BOX Motion Code support from start to finish. Although National Treasure 2 includes only a handful of overtly "D-BOXed" scenes, the overall focus on subtle motions … [Read more...]
The 6th Day D-BOX Review
The 6th Day was one of only a handful of here-and-gone movies starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, a rather surprising development considering the film is chock full of action scenes. Ah-nuld and action normally bring out the box office best, but such was not the case with this film. With its release on Blu-ray Disc, The 6th Day clearly tried to reach new viewers, a mission that got a huge assist from D-BOX Technologies, which has included its Motion Code support directly on the disc. The 6th Day wraps the subject of … [Read more...]
The Nightmare Before Christmas D-BOX Review
The Nightmare Before Christmas is one of Walt Disney Pictures' biggest Blu-ray releases of 2008, save for maybe Wall*E and Sleeping Beauty (Disney's first Platinum Edition Blu-ray). The movie and its stop-motion star, Jack Skellington, have developed such a cult following, in fact, that Disney re-decorates its Haunted Mansion theme park ride every Halloween to reflect the would-be Santa impersonator. So to have The Nightmare Before Christmas appear on Blu-ray is not only a nod to Disney's stalwart support of the HD … [Read more...]
New D-BOX Video Explains "How It Works"
For the past few weeks, DailyGame has been reviewing Blu-ray movies encoded with D-BOX Motion Code. We've received multiple inquiries asking for more information, so today, we'd like to refer you to a video produced by D-BOX Technologies themselves that explains "how we do it." The new D-BOX corporate video, available here, explains more about the company as well as how its engineers encode the Motion Codes onto Blu-ray and DVD movies and really make you feel like you're inside each scene. DailyGame has more D-BOX … [Read more...]
Cloverfield D-BOX Review
Much like Snakes on a Plane, Cloverfield had an incredible online build-up prior to hitting theaters last year, with Blair Witch-esque videos that left viewers wondering what on Earth this movie was about? Turns out, the question "what IS on Earth?" was more appropriate, as the final movie felt more like a Godzilla clone infused with Aliens than it did a well thought-out feature. Still, the concept of experiencing an alien invasion through the eyes of characters on the ground provided both a literal and figurative new … [Read more...]
How to Hook Up D-BOX to a PlayStation 3
The PlayStation 3 is by far the best-selling Blu-ray player, a sign that Sony has once again succeeded in turning a game console into a video-format Trojan horse. Although Blu-ray supporters generally focus on the format's video and audio quality, a company called D-BOX Technologies has flown completely under the Blu-ray radar, and it's a company that PS3 owners will definitely want to keep tabs on. D-BOX has existed for years in the DVD realm, but it's really coming into its own with Blu-ray. And what few PS3 owners … [Read more...]
