When LucasArts and BioWare released Knights of the Old Republic, they probably didn't realize just how big a hit they had on their role-playing hands. When it came time for a follow-up, BioWare was employed elsewhere, which left Obsidian to take the reins for a sequel that turned out to be not quite as compelling. For BioWare's next hit-in-the-making, Mass Effect, Microsoft wanted to avoid that fate, signing the developer to create the entire trilogy on the Xbox 360. And from what we've seen of the first chapter here at … [Read more...]
Shadowrun
It's hard to put your heart into a preview when it's surrounded by so much post-E3 negativity. We tried to inject some interesting conversation into the Shadowrun debate with our Mouse vs. Controller interview, but it only served to fuel the fire. The negativity hinges on Shadowrun being focused on online melee and ranged combat, that there's no single-player campaign, and that it's got a license slapped onto it that probably shouldn't be there. But after playing Shadowrun at E3 for ourselves, it's clear that the … [Read more...]
DailyGame's Best of E3 2006 Awards
We walked into E3 2006 with great aspirations of being bowled over by new systems, being wowed by next-gen games and, on the whole, feeling as though we'd just experienced the Holy Grail of gaming. What we left with was more of a warm, fuzzy feeling that the videogame industry is not only alive and kicking, but going in new directions not just with gameplay but with immersion on the whole. Whether that immersion takes the form of questioning our own humanity, as in our Best of Show: First-Person Shooter, in its engaging … [Read more...]
Spore
The last time Will Wright proposed a vast social experiment masquerading as a game, Electronic Arts nearly laughed him out of the room. Who in their right mind would buy a game that simulated human relationships? Tens of millions of dollars later, The Sims has become a worldwide phenomenon, and EA has given Wright carte blanche at Maxis Studios. So as Wright continues to mark-off months developing his latest creation, Spore, EA is begrudgingly giving him time to make the "game" that he envisions. And if you thought the … [Read more...]
BioShock
It's easy to read about BioShock and think it's going to be a Deus Ex clone. Heck, we even flat-out asked that of Irrational Games at E3 when we got our private demonstration. The game's played from a first-person perspective. Its story explores the highs and lows of human nature. It lets players make modifications to their physical self or gives them the freedom to not make a single one. Sure sounds like a clone to us. But there's one key difference that will take BioShock above the already-high levels of Deus Ex: an … [Read more...]
Videogames: Desperately Seeking Susan Powter
You probably noticed IGN, GameSpot, GameTrailers and many other big sites posted their Best of E3 2006 awards today. We were going to, but we decided to hold off a day or two to make sure we were comfortable with our decisions. It would've been nice to see those big sites do the same, because other than the people on their advertising staff, I don't see how anyone at those outlets can sleep at night knowing just how much they've whored themselves out for The Almighty Dollar. Look, I'd love to make DailyGame a full-time … [Read more...]
Assassin's Creed
When we first saw the teaser trailer for Assassin's Creed, two thoughts came immediately to mind: first, that this was just a Prince of Persia game in a Crusades-era skin, and second, that the trailer was one of the infamous "target" videos and showed nothing remotely close to gameplay footage. Both assumptions were completely wrong. Assassin's Creed looks at first blush like a Prince of Persia knockoff, with its acrobatic combat and old-world setting, and in fact it seems to play similarly as well. The difference, … [Read more...]
ThrillVille Preview
The great irony of the Xbox 360 is that one of its killer apps, Xbox Live Arcade, involves the least next-gen games around. Who would buy a next-gen system for old-school titles? Apparently a lot of people, as the Xbox Live Marketplace has already seen 24 million downloads of online content. Heck, even current-gen Xbox owners have a penchant for old-style games, modding their consoles to install MAME and other surprisingly basic titles. What makes the upcoming game ThrillVille so unique, then, is that it's bringing … [Read more...]
Heavenly Sword
Of the games at Sony's E3 2006 press conference, none looked more engaging than Heavenly Sword. Others looked interesting, but Heavenly Sword showed the most style and fluid action...the types of things that would actually keep us playing the game. Steeped in wushu combat, the same fantastical and mid-air fighting made famous in movies like "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," Heavenly Sword is an action fan's dream. Button mashers will have fun fighting groups of enemies with wushu flair, while more-accomplished fans of … [Read more...]
Wii Sports
It can be hard to describe actually using the Nintendo Wii controller, almost like trying to tell someone who's never used a mouse and keyboard setup how to do so in a PC first-person shooter. But Nintendo, in all its infinite gameplay wisdom, has created a series of games that make describing the Wii controller a breeze. This collection of games, called Wii Sports, includes a handful of sports games that use the controller exactly as you'd use the sporting equipment in real life, making for both an easy-to-describe … [Read more...]
