London, United Kingdom – An Ancient Fad. In the odd chance you haven’t heard there is a new trend in town: storytelling. But is this really news? From ancient myths to modern screenplays story structure seems to have a harmony that the human brain is perfectly tuned to understand. So, is storytelling the new lingua franca of human communication?
All signs seem to point in that direction. Everything, from social media to marketing messages, is trying to portray itself as storytelling. Facebook posts are now called stories, to sell something you have to tell a story, a pitch of any sort has to have a narrative core. The message is clear: “I won’t listen unless you captivate my attention with a Story!”
It is on this premise that SlickFlick, a new iPhone app for picture stories, is being build. Under the strap line “Stories on the fly”, SlickFlick encourages people to reveal the story behind their photos with Captions, Stickers and Animations.
This means you can assemble a photo album of sorts in a few seconds from your iPhone and add in captions and stickers to enrich your story, which then the app delivers as an animated slide show. The app aims to engage users in creating stories and entertain them with other people’s stories.
Since its release in the App Store just 10 days ago SlickFlick has seen funny, moving, quirky personal accounts of currents events such as Hurricane Sandy, Raikkonen’s wining Formula 1 race, Guy Fawkes Day and now the US Election. These are not the telegraphic notes you find on Twitter, nor the Instagram moment captures. These are genuine attempts by ordinary people to tell personal stories, a window in what they think and feel.
